Are there more tests I should be asking to get? Based in scotland. Been taking Levothyroxine for 2 years (since diagnosed). Only found out about a month ago that I had virtually no vit D. Taking 800iu now. Feel no different. Want to be referred to endo but not sure they will as my results are normal. Feel dizzy at times as so tired. Had low pressure last time but that didn't seem to bother doc. advise would be helpful please as I am so tired don't think I will ask the right questions but plan to write things down

800iu of vitamin D is not going to be enough to replenish your levels. It is barely enough to maintain them. The best way to increase vitamin D levels is to spend time in the sun (sensibly of course) but that is easier said than done with the weather at the moment! Try to get as much sun as you can (but don't burn) but you will probably also need to increase your supplement too for a while. I take 2000iu but others take more. I certainly wouldn't take more than 5000iu without advice from a doctor with experience in this area.

Your vitamin D deficiency is almost certainly playing a part in the way you feel.

Do you have your latest thyroid test results? They may be normal but they may not be optimal for you. If you have them please post them and someone will be able to advise.

It would also be wise to get the following tests:

Serum iron (needs to be well within range - nowhere near the bottom)

Ferritin (stored iron - needs to be above 70 for women, higher for men)

Folate

Vitamin B12 (should be above 400-500, not the 200 the NHS says is normal).

You would probably benefit from taking a good quality B vitamin complex and 1000mcg B12 (methylcobalamin) daily if you are not deficient but if your level is below 400, 5000mcg B12 would be better. Low B12 and iron can also contribute to your symptoms so it is important to get this checked out.

Thanks Carolyn

although I have suffered from this for years I still feel clueless.

I never see the same GP twice and on my last visit the doc didn't seem to equate lack of Vit D with thyroid and she didn't really understand how much to give me.

Really appreciate you taking time to reply. i have never seen my results but will ask for a copy.

Cheers

Katie

Hi

I also have low Vit D level 22 and G.P gave me 800i.u daily but when I posted on here I was advise it was not enough for my levels so I bought my own in form of Vit D Spray 6000i.u. daily

but you must check you have had calcium checked also before taking Vit D. There is a website were you can check your level and how much to take to get your levels up, I think its grassroots but someone else on here will hopefully give you correct details. I think if you are hypo then your Vit D levels should be in the top range to make you feel well also there are other tests you should ask your G.P. to do Vit B12 ferritin and folate as these and low Vit D can cause tierdness and dizzyness. Also the more knowledgable on this site will ask you for your ranges for TSH and T4 as G.P. often say they are in normal range but that is not good enough if you are not feeling well. Hope this helps a little

Good Luck browny

Thanks so much

You can buy Solgar 4000IU for less than £20. Every time the sun is out - get outside without sun glasses on and enjoy what little we have :) (I know it's not a lot).

I occasionally do 4-6 mins on a sun bed to perk me up.

Try and get your FT3 done too. Good luck x

I think it's been 15 years since I read an article about the elderly in nursing homes were found to improve the "falling" rates after increasing vitamin D levels. I presume they lost their balance and/or were dizzy. Now that it is more common to test vitamin D, it is evident that it is not just the elderly with low levels. You might be surprised that several methods of raising the level of D by prescription are 50,000 units once a week; 15,000 i.u. twice a week, etc. Lately I have read it is better to take xtra large doses occasionally rather than a daily dose. That may be more effective. You can get vitamin in sprays or gels packed in oil or liquid drops Try to get olive oil rather than soy which is one of the methods. It is not expensive iherb.com/search?kw=vitamin...
