Am i depressed or is the levio not working comprehensivly
Hello Ayala, can you say what your dose of levo currently is and any results from blood tests you have had? Praps you could do with an increase but without those its difficult for anyone to comment really.
If you feel ill for long enough it is enough to make anyone feel depressed but I don't think antidepressants can be the answer. I became hypothyroid after the menopause and found it a very difficult and confusing time. Have you been tested/diagnosed as hypothyroid?
yes .it was 17 if that means anything to you.
Yes! Have you tested deficient for iodine? If not, stop taking it! OK, OK, I know I shouldn't say that, but my experiences with iodine make me very very wary to the point of obsession.
I know you need iodine to make thyroid hormone, but if the factory is failing, why send it increased ingredients? It just stresses the thyroid and a sick gland should not be stressed. Nor should a healthy one, come to that. Excess iodine can cause a euthyroid person to become hypo or hyper; it can cause a hypo to develope Hashi's and make a Hashi's symptoms a thousand times worse. It can also cause cancer. Your doctor is an alpha idiot!
Have you had thyroid tests? TSH, FT4 and FT3? Antibodies? If you have, post them here and let us have a look. If you haven't run away from this doctor as fast as you can before he destroys your life!
Hop I haven't frightened you too much but I am really concerned about this.
Hugs, Grey
ok what is a TSH. if had a thyroid test which was 17 if that makes any sence. it means that im hypo, yes you have freaked me out.
Now you're freaking me out!!! Need more details. Doesn't your doctor test you regularly? If your TSH was 17 it means you are/were very hypo. So he gave you thyroxine (T4, Levo)? How much? Has he increased the dose since? Does he do anything except prescribe anti-depressants and iodine? I don't understand what is going on here.
Hugs, Grey
I must explain better. First my levels were 17. I was given Leviothyroxin. slowly but surely my levels have come down. They are within a good margin. I am on 125 micrograms per day. I still find I have no energy. it feels like no one is in the driving seat. im taking a herbal remedy which helpes but i want the real thing. Energy from within. I had no reason to think that iodine was going to stress my thyroid more.
I understand you didn't think that, not many people do. So is the herbal remedy kelp? Are you still taking it? Of course it 'helps' to begin with, but it's the long-term consequences that should be thought about.
But even so, we cannot see the whole picture or answer you original question without knowing your thyroid hormone levels - which sound as if they're too low. It really is vital for you to get copies - with the ranges - otherwise it's like shooting flies in the dark. 'Normal' is meaningless. What is a 'normal' TSH - now, not when you were first dianosed, which obviously was too high? 'Within a good margin' is meaningless too. What is the actual number? What are your FT4 and FT3 levels? When was your last test? When was your last increase.
I'm not just being nosey, asking all these questions, I would really like to help you but with the limited information you've given, I can't.
Hugs, Grey
Don't be freaked out, it is sensible to learn about your condition - so many people are wrongly diagnosed with depression - and if you have been depressed, as you say you have, you will know the difference betweeen that and just feeling low and off-colour. Many people diagnosed with depression have low thyroid function, and once it is corrected properly, the symtoms go away.
If as Grey has suggested, you could post your test results here, with the lab reference ranges, then someone with more knowledge than me can comment on them. Just ask your surgery for a copy - it is perfectly within your rights.
And was it you who asked your GP for Iodine, or was it your GP who started you on it? Ask them why it is necessary?
Hope this helps

There is no reason why you cannot show your GP and discuss. This is an extract:-
The relation between thyroid function and depression has long been recognized.
talk to your doctor and explain exactly how your depression makes you feel. when I was I depressed I didn't go to the docs and it was hell for me and all those I know. anti-depressants are not always the answer and you may find local support groups for people with depression in your area your doc may give you info on that or the internet.dont get freaked out by what people say and remember you are not alone
