Daughters thyroid tests results .. are they good or bad .. can anyone help .

Since my daughter was a little girl she has had blue shiners under her eyes , her hair was fine and lanky , she was always freezing cold with blue hands and feet , started puberty at 10 and has had problems ever since ... now she is older her symptoms are getting worse has to sleep when she comes home from work , sleeps all morning on a weekend but would sleep all day if her husband and three children would let her..

I have only just found out the reason for the blue shiners under her eyes could be thyroid related ... but when she started with obvious thyroid symptoms when she was older I sent her to her GP for tests.

They always tell her they come back normal , her last tests were in 2011 because they say she doesn't have a thyroid problem but I worry about her, they have given her Amatriptaline ?

Below are the tests results she requested from the GP today ... when I said I would post them on here for someones advice.

Last test results from 5 August 2011

Serum TSH level = 0.99 mU/L

Serum free T4 = 10.8 pmol/L

Serum free triiodothyronine level (T3) = 3.8 pmol/L

My iron levels were low when they did the above tests so I am not sure if that has an affect?

Test done July 2011

Serum TSH level = 1.24 mU/L

Serum free T4= 14 pmol/L

T3 - not done with that test

No range is given by the lab on her test results.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you have on the above levels :-) xx

I am sorry. I have edited the question as I see you have mentioned the inability to have the ranges.

This is a link and you will see how this doctor diagnosis patients as he was taught to do as a trainee doctor. He only uses the TSH as a tool but detects clinical symptoms.

Thanks shaws

I've had a brain wave and have used the ranges they used on my results .... as its the same hospital lab

Last test results from 5 August 2011

Serum TSH level = 0.99 mU/L ... 0.2 - 4.5 u

Serum free T4 = 10.8 pmol/L 9 - 24 u

Serum free triiodothyronine level (T3) = 3.8 pmol/L 2.5 - 5.7 u

My iron levels were low when they did the above tests so I am not sure if that has an affect?

Test done July 2011

Serum TSH level = 1.24 mU/L 0.2 - 4 - 5 u

Serum free T4= 14 pmol/L 9 - 24 u

T3 - not done with this test

Maybe these will make more sense ... ;-)

Would love for us both to go to Dr S but we just can't afford :-)

the only thing I can suggest is to have her tested for vitamin B12 which when deficient gives EXACTLY the same symptoms as hypothyroid. Anything less than 550 she is deficient and anything less than 180 they should offer her injections.

OK thanks nbd I will tell her this ..

I really don't want her to be hyperthyroid ...

But now I realise she has had the symptoms all her life.

I just wish I had been more knowledgable all those years ago . :-)

people can be B12 deficient from birth if the mother is deficient (it's a thought....if you were low in B12 when you were pregnant then your daughter would have started low too and/or she may have intrinsic factor antibodies.

You could possibly be right, she could be .. she has been anemic on and off most of her life but they have only ever given her iron I think this last time it was meta sulphate or something .. I could be wrong though.

I don't actually know if I was short of vitimin B12 but I did have to have iron ( jectifa ? ) injections everyday for three weeks after I had her, something to do with me having very low blood count.

I remember I couldn't take the iron tablets because they made me violently sick ... I also had morning sickness 24-7 for the whole pregnancy ?

I didnt understand the reason for having the injections at the time as I know they gave me blood .. I'm A negative and they had to send to the blood bank for it while they were preparing me for theatre and I was still receiving blood when I came around.

I wasnt supposed to have gone into labour and was having a planned ceasarian but Karen was born seven weeks early and was also blue they didn't know if they could save her as she was 7 weeks early, they said they didnt know if they could save her but because of her weight they would try so they fought for her life all night but we still had to register her the following day .... my son weighed 9lb 12oz and I'm 4ft 11in

I had made antibodies when I was having my son ( back in late 60's and early 70's they didnt ask you about blood groups .. ( her father is O positive and I'm A negative ) .. my sons blood group is 0 Positive but Karens blood group is A positive ?

They gave me plasma when I had my son because they didn't have time to test my blood.

Anyway I will speak to her tomorrow and tell her about the B12 and the intrinsic factor antibodies ? ( will look that up in a minute )

Thank you very much

oh sorry :( yes she definitely needs to be tested for B12 and if this comes back lower than 550 she needs supplementing. Remember that the NHS 'normal' range is something like 180 to 800 in most hospitals so if she has say a level of 190 they will tell her she's NORMAL, don't accept normal as an answer, ask for the printout of the result with ranges. If she comes back below NHS normal range ask for an intrinsic factor antibodies. Let us know how she gets on

Thanks .. thank you so much for all your advise.

I will let you know ... I will write it on my wipe board so as I remember everything .... aggghhh I can't even remember at the end of the day what I had for breakfast haha

I see the endo next week so hopefully he can/ will sort out all my health issues ... I stopped taking the T3 I had aquired :-) ( to trial myself after the GP changed his mind and said rather wait until you see the endo) and took for two weeks until last Friday ...

Good grief the difference in not taking it is unbelievable I can barely function again, the exuastion, the body pain , too heavy to turn over in bed , my eyes feel like they need matchsticks to keep them open.

Thanks again Lynn

Sorry what am I on about ..... I mean hypo ..

Hello,

She really does need to have up to date tests before we can give you any valuable comments.

The tests you have posted are nearly 2 years old. It is not unreasonable for her ask to be retested.

She should ask her doctor for tests as follows:

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/diagno...

Would it be possible for you or her husband or a friend to go with her to the GP to verify her case?
