I have recently been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and have heard that sea kelp is good for your thyroid function. Is this true and can you take it if you are on thyroxine medication

This is a very contreversial subject which is frequently discussed on here. Sea kelp is supposed to be good for thyroid function because it has a high iodine content and the thyroid needs iodine to make thyroid hormone. And if the cause of your under-active thyroid is iodine deficiency then, yes, it could help. But please get tested for iodine before taking it because too much iodine is as bad as too little - if not worse.
If you do a search for iodine or sea kelp on this site, you are bound to find a lot more information.

There is debate about whether iodine helps or makes things worse, also it is already in Thyroxine. Perhaps this link can help you.. J

Thanks. I was not aware that there is iodine in thyroxine.
I have had hypo for 27yrs, lost a bit of Waite in the beginning when put on Eltroxin but slowly put it back on and more so was permanently on a diet and some one recommended Sea Kelp so I took and I think it was too much for me. As thyroid is some sort of breakdown with Autoimune system thyroxin or sea kelp is best, I would not take sea kelp with out talking to your GP, I finished up with type 1 Diabetes and I think it could have been because I over loaded my auto immune system as I didn't realise how fine tuned everything is. Good luck, Kathy
