Having spent the last week with bloating, loose stools, anxiety and feeling generally awful....I've turned to Dr google. To my surprise I've found numerous references to the use of antihistamines for ibs d. Does anyone have any experience and success with them please?

IBS d and antihistamines

I have multiple allergies and am on an antihistamine twice a day on prescription. As I have been on this for donkey's years, it is hard to say if it helps my gut issues. So, I suppose this might be trial and error for you. Worth a try I suggest.
I did some research into the use of Ebastine, an anti-histamine for IBS. The main issue is that anti-histamines can have systematic side effects such as headaches, sleepiness, and dry mouth:

Until researchers come up with a way of delivering the anti-histamine effects directly to the gut and not impact any other part of the body, I'd be wary of taking these purely for IBS.

Thank you for your reply and information...I guess we all get to a point where we are desperate for a solution in whatever form.
When I had particularly severe and long lasting issue IBS-D following Covid/travel abroad I looked into antihistamines (specifically those that target gut histamine receptors) as a way of calming things down (albeit just masking the underlying problem). Those that seemed most researched/effective were not available/only by prescription. So I dug deeper into underlying cause and alighted upon mast cell stabilisers and Elixa probiotics (success with which I have talked about in another post 'Elixa Probiotics posted by KlayPigeon')
