Buscopan works for some, but it does nothing for me. I've been taking Fybogel (1 sachet) for the last 5 days (dietician advice to increase soluble fibre intake) and it seems to correlate with increasing painful guts in the 12 or so hours after. It's supposed to help motility; it does a bit. Paracetamol works for me up to a point.

Thank you for your reply, I have been taking Panadol and they work to some extent, it’s a horrible illness isn’t it.

I am afraid to eat Weetabix and I love it.

Many thanks

Jan

Hi Buscopan & Fybogel do nothing for me. Do you have IBS D or C?

Yes, it's a ridiculous condition to have, so destructive. I also love all those breakfast cereals but they don't like me!

Try milk kefir. Start with a small amount. It was the only thing that significantly helped me. After that I could eat most things, but I try to follow the fodmaps recommendation. Download free fodmaps app. Milk kefir is safe to drink even if you are lactose intolerant.

I am based in Australia, but I am pretty sure UK has it. Check Supermarket yogurt section. It is a much more potent probiotics compared to yogurt and more liquid.

You can make milk kefir yourself. All you need are a few 'beans' that you can buy quite cheaply or ask around in your friends group, someone will have some. I was told by my GP and Gastroenterologist that homemade kefir is best but avoid the supermarket ones. Why, I don't know. Been making and taking homemade kefir for a year or more now and it works well for me. 75 year old male with IBD in UK. Search 'how to make milk kefir' on YouTube.

Yes, I actually made my own using kefir grains I obtained from a fermentation community on facebook. @Blueberrylover, go to facebook and join a local fermentation community. likely someone can spare you kefir grains/ starter for free. Home made ferments are always much more live and potent than store bought or at least you know they are from real kefir grains rather than just yogurt cultures. Australia sells good kefir at the cold section, but they are expensive, so I am glad I can make my own.

Hello, you state that you have IBS but you don’t specify whether it’s constipation or diarrhoea predominant. The fact that you have tried Buscopan suggests it might be the former. You don’t specify your age which is also very important. However, I presume you have been fully investigated, including the exclusion of coeliac disease, and that this new pain symptom is not a new one ,such as a symptom due to gallstones, or peptic ulcer disease . Your doctor is the first port of call if this is a new symptom. I’m sure that you are au fait with the various strategies in tackling this condition, dependent on what type of IBS you have. Dietary modification, antispasmodics, soluble fibre for IBS -C. A motility modifier, such as Linclotide for constipation. Amitriptyline in small doses can be useful for pain, but used with care if you have IBS-C. Finally, Alflorex, a probiotic, is certainly worth a try, and Ferrocalm, if symptoms appear prolonged, but one needs to be aware that this probiotic can be a problem with people who are histamine sensitive. Also Enterosgel, a product useful for treating the symptoms of infective diarrhoea, shown to be useful in patients with IBS-D, may be helpful, as well as a new, novel agent Gelsectan, available off prescription, which might be similarly beneficial. Good luck.

Morning. My daughter swears by Buscopan. I don't find they work for me and over the years I have tried lots of drugs from my GP. I know that for me diet and stress are the triggers. Nuts and rich foods containing lots of dairy in particular and an outbreak of IBS can last weeks. If have to go out I take imodium. For a while I found prednisolone seemed to reduce IBS incidents quite a bit but that was before the pred side effects started and I was a bit euphoric because the polymyalgia symptoms had gone. When I had radiotherapy for bowel cancer in the 90's the hospital gave me huge prescriptions for Imodium. It does seem to calm things down and relieve the dread cramps. IBS is awful and very unglamorous which can get you down. Good luck.

Hi Bluberrylover, Fybogel and Buscopan didn't work for me, but it does for some. I think it really depends on the cause of your IBS.

I take Fibogel twice a day. I sometimes miss one! It .Just be taken after a meal and it is important to also drink other I have gluten free granola for breakfast with fruit. It is oat based which I find I tolerate better than wheat. Do eat lots of fruit and veg and keep off the carbs. I kept a food diary for a while and soon ide tidied a few things I can't eat. I also find smaller meals are better.

I am intolerant to both Buscopan (for some reason it gives me heart palpitations) and Fybogel (due to psyllium content which bloats me). Alflorex probioic helped me most with my IBS pain and made me more tolerant to a wider range of foods.

Buscopan is an anticholinergic med, one of the side effects of which is heart rhythm disturbance including palpitations (extra beats, dropped beats and runs of increased heart rate). I guess that those of us with lower parasympathetic/vagal tone will notice the effect more.

Hi I have IBS D, triggered by stress and certain dairy nuts pulses , beans and some veg especially broccoli. I can't eat wholemeal bread or bread with a lot of seeds. I follow a fodmap diet. I can't eat kefir either I had a bad flare up several weeks ago and had a full set of blood tests. Everything was fine. I was prescribed mebeverine which stops the stomach spasms. I take it 3 times a day 20 mins before food. I was also given amitriptyline but I had some unpleasant side effects so I'm just on the mebeverine ATM. It seems to be working. My tummy is so much more settled and I'm not panicking every time I leave the house IBS can be so life limiting and stressful but I've found it's different for everyone

Can I approach your question from another angle. Has your GP conducted the elimination tests, and said its IBS?If yes, Have you the diarrhoea or constipation form?
