Pain after exercise - IBS?

Hi all,

I did some leg training on Monday at the gym, did some front and back squats with some lunges which felt fine at the time but it was the first time in a while that I'd trained legs.

Obviously a lot of the exercises put strain on my abdomen/core.

Yesterday lunchtime I started getting severe shooting pains and cramps which got progressively worse and continued over night and are still present this morning.

I'm not sure if it's just a flare up, my muscles cramping or something else.

Has anyone experienced a flare up after rigorous exercise before?

Hi! I don't know what may be the cause of your pain but I can tell you that after my Pilates/ Yoga classes, I have a light lunch and experience pain, cramping, especially if we have been working on the core

I train (resistance) generally 4days a week.

And opt for machines for a lot of exercises, for me I do all I can to not engage my abdominal muscles.

Personally if I train squat or certainly deadlift, I’m guaranteed to get symptoms.

If you haven’t trained legs in a while, then I’d suspect it’s not only DOM’s your feeling, but have also aggravated your abdominal area/s and intestines.

Difficult to recommend as we all suffer differently - but for me the regularity of my sessions means I rarely suffer onset of symptoms post Gym, and generally speaking for me exercise in general will reduce my symptoms- but also being mindful to reduce engagement of my abdominal muscles aswell.

Hope that helps!

I am similar in respect to doing resistance training but being mindful not to over exert myself and impact my abdomen too much for this very reason.I believe it may be down to the rigorous training that I'm not used too as I hadn't really engaged my core too much in recent months.

That being said the pain I'm experiencing has been excruciating at times and is now radiating to my lower right abdomen and lower right back, I have been close to calling 111 or seeing the GP but assume it'll just get passed off as IBS again (which it may be but I can't see it with the pain I'm having).

I'm hoping to pay for a private ultrasound of my abdomen when I can afford it to eliminate any other tissues with my organs on this region.

TBH that doesn’t sound ‘IBS’ - have you torn a muscle or ligament perhaps, trapped a nerve?

Definitely consult the professionals and don’t be afraid to question everything!

Many times I’ve been thrown “it’s IBS” and although that has some grounding, further investigation would of saved me years of personal learning.

Sincerely hope the symptoms reside for you and you get some answers and helps from the doctors.

Good luck.

Incase you haven’t heard of it, have a read up on ‘visceral hypersensitivity’.

Ultimately I can relate to this 100% and believe it to be the basis of my own IBS symptoms and problems.

don’t hydrate properly plenty of magnesium, potassium and not excess salt. Calcium is just as important ideally 2:1 ratio with magnesium, that’s elemental amounts. Sounds bit complicated but

Calcium and magnesium absorbed from food is around the same anyway 35% and also very similar for the basic supplements of then oxide, carbonate.

Of course low magnesium could be a high % absorbed and low vitamin D can mean little calcium absorbed

no to anything stomach or bowel, it would be that painful you’d ring an ambulance if it was due to physical exertion and anything severe.

We all have different exercise needs, and different exercise needs at different times!

I have had pain after too much exercise, plus I have had an upset gut the next morning.

It's a question of finding the "sweet spot" on any given day. On some days the body just doesn't want a hard workout.

We are encouraged to push through, to get the endorphins going, to do our personal best time, or best workout, (often according to the "apps" we are electronically connected to !), or basically to behave as if we were on top form all the time! I have heard of people who go running when they have flu or a bad cold!

The secret is listening to the body. Not being a complete lazy bum, but listening to what's right for you On any given day.

For instance, I discovered that I can do all sorts of hard work and walking during the day (usually between midday and four) Bear in mind I'm going on 72, so it's different perhaps for younger people.

If I push myself too hard too early in the day, I suffer for it which means my gut does too.

If I go for a fairly strenuous evening walk even a couple or more hours after dinner, usually that results in not such a good morning re: the bathroom. It took me ages to learn that. I did used to like an evening walk about 10 years ago.

So basically, forcing my body to do exercise when I am getting "gut feelings" it just wants to rest a bit, isn't so positive. So do listen to what's going on in your energy levels, whatever age you are. We are not robots.
