I began suffering from IBS about two and half years ago but this latest episode is worse because I am also suffering from nausea, does anyone else get this?

Hi, I can't say I suffer from nausea but I do suffer from stomach pain and bad heart burn. A high percentage of people with IBS also suffer from stomach acid issues. The nausea can be one of the symptoms.

If the usual IBS medication isn't working, it might be worth checking if you're also suffering from high stomach acid as you'll need a different type of medication for it.

I hope that comes of some help and ghat you get better soon.

Awe bless you. I had that done, it wasn't pleasant at all but that's how the found out about that issue so I'm grateful. Stress can be a big trigger just as it can be for IBS. Have a lovely Christmas mas.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea were major symptoms for me of Bile Acid Malabsorption that is frequently missed. Completely fixed by Questran. Check it out?

I hope you feel encouraged and supported by the responses so far. The procedures you have planned are bearable as long as you stay positive and keep calm. In the meantime , ginger is helpful and sipping water to keep yourself hydrated. Rest as much as you can. Fingers crossed for you

Hi, i also suffer from nausea, i have mainly ibs c but get ibs d at times. When i get a flare up the nausea gets worse. My gp gave me Stemitil, i only take a quarter of the 5mg when i get bad, its a controlled drug which is used for other medical conditions i believe, so i am careful with it, but that little quarter really helps, sometimes it clears it up completely. Nausea is horrible so i empathise with you. Hope u get relief and i wish u a Happy Xmas x

Yes, I get the nausea during a flare up. I have a dread of vomiting and the stress of worrying about this make everything worse. I keep taking deep breaths to try and calm myself and don't eat much or anything till it passes. Hope you're feeling better and a Merry Christmas 🎄 to you all.

Hi, thanks for replying, I have to have an endoscopy and have been panicking thinking the worst . Merry Christmas 🎄 to you

Hello 👋

I get nausea and actually throw up when I have eaten wheat/gluten along with violent diarrhoea 3 or 4 times within an hour until all that comes out is water. I also sweat and shake.

It’s like my body just freaks out and throws it out of any orifice!!

Best advice is find out what you are intolerant to and do not eat it in any amount.

The intolerances can change too - I’ve had 20 years of wheat being the culprit but recently found that alcohol and certain nuts can set me off too.

Hope you find your kryptonite.

Jac

Thank you for replying, I have been staying away from alcohol for a couple of weeks, I will just have to try different things.

Hi again 👋

It takes at least a day or two for the offending food to reach my ‘very irritable’ bowel before it ‘throws its toys out the pram’ so if you do test certain foods it’s important to totally exclude it for at least a week preferably a fortnight.

Even a teeny amount will ruin your test.

The most common culprits (for most people) are wheat/gluten (and it’s hidden in all sorts of stuff like some oven chips, liquorice, sauces/gravy, sausages etc).

Also dairy, alcohol, caffeine, oh there’s loads but just try one group at a time.

Good luck & I hope it doesn’t spoil your Christmas - J xxx

Thanks again, I'm going to try excluding different foods but I hope I don't have to give up my favourite tea bags.Hope you have a lovely Christmas xx

I have never found tea to be a problem. But I use a loose leaf tea which I make in a teapot, and I have no milk or sweeteners with it. But tannin (which tea leaves have) can have a slightly astringent effect on the gut, which can help if it's IBS D. The amount of caffeine in that doesn't cause any problems. Tea is much lower in caffeine than coffee anyway

I go through phases of extreme nausea and it's debilitating. No explanation either! I've also had a few endoscopies through the years and they are nothing to worry about - much better not to eat for 6 hours than do that whole other end prep stuff! XX

Hello, thanks for replying, I will take your advice about the endoscopy, I would much rather fast than the alternative xx

As far as I have heard it seems that sometimes, or maybe with some people, nausea can be a part of IBS. I got some nausea at first (not bad and hardly ever stopped me eating, and came and went) -that was in 2018. But I don't get that much any more, and my appetite is good.

However, I think IBS can change sometimes, kind of randomly, and switch about so all sorts of changes can happen with it. For instance I started out as (diagnosed) IBS -D but over time I sometimes get a couple of days of mild constipation for no reason. So now feel I'm probably IBS-M.

I did experiment with things to help the nausea at the time I got it. One thing is pretty universally accepted help for nausea, and can help pregnant women with morning sickness. The other two are almost certainly idiosyncratic to me only and may not help, or may be inadvisable.

So, the first one is Ginger. Either fresh ginger pieces (about an inch long and about 1/4 inch thick peeled) you can nibble on, or mix with a bit of honey, as it's a bit hot for the mouth. Or ginger tea made with either fresh root chopped up. or dried ginger powder. Ginger beer can help too, so long as you choose one without artificial sweeteners. I find sweeteners like Sorbitol, Mannitol etc irritate my IBS.

The other two things that helped my own nausea to stop very quickly and my normal appetite to come back was ...having a good cry. Another one was sipping a shot of brandy with honey.

Those suggestions as I say may be just for me, and not suit anyone else.

Hi, thanks for replying, I will certainly try the ginger and I have heard that a little brandy can help.it helps to know I'm not alone x

Nausea is often related to trapped wind. To prove the point, try taking Rennie Deflatine when you are feeling nauseous, since this disperses gas bubbles. It is also worth keeping a food diary to find out what specific foods might be causing it. The quantity of specific foods is important too since you may tolerate some foods in smaller amounts but larger amounts might make you nauseous.

Thank you for your reply, I will try anything to relieve my symptoms and keeping a food diary sounds like a good idea.

Luisa22 profile image

Yes! I got trapped wind today and it had a strange effect on me and I think it affected the Vagus nerve in some way I felt a sense of doom I couldn't control, something akin to nausea, and a terrible shaky 'out of it' feeling. Passed a bit of wind while walking and all the other symptoms magically disappeared straight away!!

xjrs profile image
xjrs in reply toLuisa22

Haha. Funny that. It's amazing the symptoms wind can be responsible for.

Luisa22 profile image
Luisa22 in reply toxjrs

Yes, it's bizarre. Before IBS, if I'd got a bit of trapped wind it wouldn't have had that effect on my whole system. I would have just said "ouch", got on with my day, passed the wind, end of story! I don't know what it is about IBS that has to involve so much drama!

My conclusion is that either it's a physical effect involving vagus nerve function, some unknown thing involving serotonin, or a form of anxiety with some level of PTSD attached (perhaps because of bad times experienced in the past when the gut felt even vaguely uneasy)?

xjrs profile image
xjrs in reply toLuisa22

I think it's a combination of environmental factors (past events and experiences) and a predisposition to IBS (even as far as genetically). Certain personality traits can be more closely correlated with IBS such as HSP (highly sensitive person): hsperson.com/ or those with autism for example.

It normally takes a trigger event such as food poisoning to kick it off in a predisposed person. For those who are not predisposed, they could have the same experiences and not suffer from IBS.

hi. I have IBS D as well. At the start of my IBS I didn’t have any nausea. But in recent months I have had some mild nausea symptoms during my flares. And my GP has confirmed it’s due to stomach acid issues. Stomach acid medication takes care of it in my case. Hope this helps. Have a merry Xmas!!!

Bookloverred69 profile image
Bookloverred69 in reply toLaxmik

Hi, thanks for replying. I too didn't have nausea when I started with IBS but with this latest flare up it's been quite bad and I now have some anti sickness tablets from my GP so I'm hoping they will do the trick, hope you have a merry Christmas too!

Sometimes I wondered if I got nausea because of some upset with serotonin. I still suspect serotonin malfunction in some way as a possible culprit in my IBS generally. But I certainly am not personally ready to go down the SSRI drug route!!

SSRIs have their place and can help some people, but I just sense they wouldn't help my IBS D.

Also at times when I feel the Vagus nerve gets involved (there have been a few times) that can make me feel mighty queer too, with lots of peculiar symptoms including heart symptoms, dreadful shakiness, and that can make me feel some kind of thing a bit like nausea. Though that hasn't happened for a while now.

Bookloverred69 in reply toLuisa22

Hi, thank you for your reply, I also get those feelings of shakiness and that my heart is racing a bit but at a recent health check my BP was fine and I wonder if my anxiety is making my symptoms worse.

Luisa22 profile image
Luisa22 in reply toBookloverred69

Yes, possibly that could be anxiety because I think flare ups and upset guts can trigger a form of anxiety response in the body. I wonder if that's related to the vagus nerve too. So many brain-gut messages go via the Vagus nerve
