IBS and wind

I have had IBS for years and I am really suffering at the moment not only with the unpredictability of BMs but also terrible bloating and wind. It seems to be worse as soon as I go out shopping or to social events. I wonder if anxiety is partly to blame.

I keep a food diary and am really careful with my diet. Have tried probiotics and Colpermin. Has anyone tried Beano?

I’m going to stay with a friend soon and am so worried about it as it’s so embarrassing. Does anyone else suffer the same thing?

sorry to hear that you are going through this, Starry56. I have similar symptoms, and I feel that anxiety does play a part.

Sorry, I haven’t found anything that helped particularly.

Yes, this sounds like me, I think anxiety is playing a huge part to what you are experiencing. I'm the same, just going to supermarkets is awful 😞. It sounds silky I know, but it's the crowds and the traffic these days and no matter how organized I try to get the shopping trips, Im still overwhelmed and when I get back home, I'm straight on the toilet. Social events are out of the question for me now, just can't cope and even visiting people I know gets worse and I worry about it prior for days. I never used to be like this, only since IBS started years ago. I used to force myself to carry on like I used to, but after a few years, i soon learned that I just couldn't and for my own health and sanity, i had to take step back. Needless to say, friends soon lost touch. I think there comes a time when we all have to start making choices. Take care

Hi I can sympathise I suffer horrendously loud wind at night which has been a relatively new thing for me. I take windsetlers though I shouldn’t as they react with my thyroid medication but they really help. Also I have a permanent hot water bottle on my stomach which also helps. I also take Beano tablets as I read about them on an NHS site. I take them before anything I eat and they do help me. They do say they help before eating any type of beans but I’m sure they help me with all foods. I hope this helps.

Hi, Yes anxiety does play a huge part too . I had similar issues. On recommendation of a lovely person on here, suggested Rennie Deflatine . I finally found some in a pharmacy. It actually does work, the bloating goes down and no more wind . All meds regarding stomach issues are expensive, but its worth a try. You could try breathing exercises or ASMR if that's your thing . It works for me . I know when it comes to IBS we are all different. You could also try peppermint tea, herbal teas are good to relax with.

I hope you feel better soon !!!

Pepto Bismol does help me in a pinch- the chewable tablets not the liquid which has sugar alcohols in it - a windmaker. It turns the stool black temporarily.

Thank you for your recommendations. It’s really helpful to know I’m not the only one suffering these symptoms.

HiTry some windease or windsettler. The active ingredient is simeticone. Simeticone essentially reduces the surface tension of bubbles causing them to pop more easily which will reduce your problem.

It's the same chemical.in infacol which is for babies colic.

Works a treat. I prescribe it for patients a lot
