The best way to stop wind from getting into your tummy, is to put less in through your mouth, so follow the diet below:

Don't drink any alcohol or fizzy drinks. Do not eat peanuts, sweetcorn, Brussel sprouts or baked beans. Eat only small mouthfuls of food at a time and chew really well (Some say thirty chews per mouthful, but I say probably ten chews is enough, if you are not overloading your mouth.) You can also ask your doctor to refer you to a dietician, in order to check out the Fodmap diet. Good luck.

I do already follow the Fodmap diet and havent eaten those things you mentioned for years. I wondered if taking Windeze which I think has Simetone in would help. I also take Mebrevine having taken that for couple of years so its not that. Its just I can feel this trapped wind its like colic in a baby.

Yes. Try Windeze or Rennie Deflatine - both have simethicone.

Sorry to hear you're struggling. Have you tried keeping a wellness diary recording what you are eating, symptoms, and how you are feeling? This may help you to identify patterns to your IBS.

Find a good holistic doctor that does biofeed back it has helped me a lot. And no it’s not all in your mind I have IBS D and C . The holistic doctor has helped me with depression with out drugs. When you have IBS your body doesn’t absorb the nutrients out of food like it is suppose to as the gut is all messed up. I am taking a wide range of supplements not drugs and I feel so much better and my immune system is finally up good, plus my mind is clearer. Not now not ever do we give up so if you can try a holistic approach it might be just what you need.

I took Gaviscon and Milk of Magnesia frequently over quite a long period. I then had kidney stones. I managed to catch one on ejection which was analysed and found to contain calcium. The consultant urologist told me it was likely formed due to taking too many of the above products. Be careful with them. Kidney stones is an excruciatingly painful condition . My lady GP said its worse pain than childbirth.

The IBS wind pain ca be down to one particular food you are eating. You may be intolerant to a food. An intolerance can occur at anytime. I suddenly became dairy intolerant at 27. Don't eat anything which isn't on the low Fodmaps diet sheet. Anything with onion, garlic, veggies like cabbage, sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower cause wind and any fizzy drinks. I get wind if I eat anything with baking powder in it. One thing to consider, it might be being caused by your anxiety meds. I have to be really careful and aware of how medications affect me. I can't tolerate Omeprazole or renitidine because of one or two of the ingredients. It can even simply be a colour in a medication. Many medications can affect IBS depending on your level of bowel sensitivity.

Yes I agree, my dentist went through all the Meds that am on, pointing out those that could cause tummy problems.

Try taking enteric coated peppermint oil capsules before eating and drinking mint tea

I've also found enterosgel helpful

Even if anxiety is a root cause of your IBS, which might or might not be true, wind isn't in your mind. Also, the next line of the script after "it's all in her mind" usually goes "she's just being silly" or "why doesn't she just snap out of it" which is just stupid since not everything in our minds is within our ability to control. And anyhow, the mind is part of the body, so mental illness is actually just a type of physical illness.

I think there are at least three different possible root causes for IBS, not necessarily mutually exclusive - food intolerance/allergy, stress/anxiety, and connective tissue problems/TMJD. There may be more - my daughter has chronic fatigue syndrome, has intermittent problems digesting some foods, and says she's been told by her health professionals that there seems to be a reasonably frequent association between CFS and IBS or food intolerance, and I'm not sure where that fits in the spectrum of IBS causes.

I have observed in myself that physical tension in particular parts of my body also appears to stimulate anxious thoughts - it's as if my brain notices the tension, thinks there must be something wrong, and goes flailing around looking for something to panic about. So I think there may be a feedback loop there that can go both ways - anxiety makes us tense up, tension tends to make us feel anxious. In my case TMJD was the root cause of my IBS, and starting to work on clearing up the physical tension cleared up almost all of the IBS symptoms.

I don't know if you are already trying other approaches as well as medication to address your anxiety, but if not then it might be worth looking into. Counselling is one approach, but it's expensive, although you can get a few sessions of one type - cognitive behavioural therapy - free through your GP if you're in the UK. My partner's tried CBT for depression, and has found it to be of some benefit though not a magic cure. Other things you could look at that focus more on relaxing to body to calm the mind include gentle yoga, mindfulness techniques, guided meditation recordings. Michael Mahoney, who also sees patients individually who are referred by their doctors, sells hypnotherapy recordings designed particularly for ibs sufferers, and I believe there are other products of that type available, but there are also free recordings & instructions on youtube and other websites about relaxation techniques.

I hope you figure out something that helps soon.

Hi, I feel just like you at the moment and since losing my husband a few months ago my ibs has got worse. No appetite, full of wind. Stomach pains that go with it all.

I write a food diary every day and have for years, trying to find the elusive trigger but it seems I can eat certain foods ok and then not . So it it leaves me to think that I cant control it this way.

I do suffer with a nervous disposition as well as fibro.

I have started to eat very small meals instead of fewer big ones. I am using a half of colofac before food. I am also doing guided relaxation on cd.

As I don't have the problem when asleep it makes me think that I should do more to calm my mind when awake. I do tai chi and yoga and nearly always feel better during and after but when the real me comes back into my head it all starts up again.

Treating the symptoms help but it's getting to the root of the actual cause and treating it is the difficulty

I just don't know if this is caused by the fibro or is it coming from stress. It's very frustrating and I am always looking for the answer having had IBS and fibro for years( I am 76) but I wont give up looking.

I take heartburn tablets from the doctor omeprazole 10mg they work well for me . I also suffer from excessive wind I find lying on my back in bed and massaging my abdomen and colon helps to shift it

Sorry to hear you are struggling. I too suffer with bad trapped wind even when I am hungry. From my own personal experience, I find eating a little but often helps with this. I also take buscopan cramps as, even though it doesn't get rid of the wind, it helps with the pain. I do some simple yoga moves and this helps to alleviate the wind on a really bad day. This can also help with anxiety. It's not in your head, the trouble is that your anxiety is not helping your stomach and vice versa. I hope you manage to find something that works for you.

Hi,

Let me tell you one thing there is nothing like IBS. It is just naval displacement from its center. It's a concept of ayurveda and doctors doesn't know anything about it and just called it IBS. It is not a disease at all, it's just body alignment has gone disturbed due to naval displacement. It can be cured within week time by nurotherepy or you can do it your own by watching you tube videos. Believe me it's true, in rural India no one suffers from this disease as they know the concept of naval displacement and cure it by doing some exercises only.
