Ongoing mucus issue ibs

Hi all. Ive posted a few times in the last 2 years regarding my horrendous issue with passing mucus from my rectum.Im 52 and all this started at 49. Feeling like i need to pass wind but if i hold a tissue at my back end its clear mucus.

Ive had a full colonoscopy done 14 months ago and was clear. Ct with contrast of small bowel and was clear except a focal constriction but was told it was ok.

I went gluten dairy free and took 1 loperamide a day and things improved since last year with the odd episode.

Well the past week and have normal stool in morning then in early evening the mucus is starting and i have to release it every so often. Its been all morning today.

I have mucus with some blood in past but again everything was clear. Maybe its nothing to worry about and i need to sort my diet fuĺly. Only thing i changed lately was i have been having 2 gluten free beers a night to relax.

Weekends i have been eating a kebab and fries. Maybe thats been building in my system

Anyone out there with similar symptoms as mine

Try to get on the Fodmap diet and stop the kebab, fries an beer. I like these things too, and don't mean to sound preachy. (at this moment I am just finishing a bottle of beer), but you do need to get your GI tract in order. It is good that your tests cam out well, though. My gastro said that mucus, in and of itself is not a serious problem, but I know it can be upsetting. Talk again to your gastro, and also consider working with a dietician.

Hello

Yes, I've had it on and off for years, part of IBS I'm afraid.

You do need to cut out any rubbish food and drink though, get your diet in order and things will improve. Think natural all the time, no processed foods if you can help it.

Thanks for the reply. Yes i have started eating healthy from yesterday but still have symptoms but i know they will take a while to settle. The doctors advice is to wear a nappy for the mucus but i would rather try and eat healthy

Hi

I don't get the mucus all the time , but on and off, during a flare up. Lately though, the past few months, I've not been too bad at all. I introduced pineapple into my fruit bowl each day, just one ring, it has natural digestive enzymes in it and it's delicious 😋. Also, if you can eat a little sweetcorn, it is a brilliant source of fiber and I've improved no end since I've been eating a bit. Frozen is better than tinned as tinned is processed. Don't know about fresh sweetcorn. And a good probiotic with prebiotic in. Hemp is another thing I use, just a sprinkling on porridge along with my other seeds which I seem to be able to eat. Seeds and hemp are packed with nutrition. I never eat cereal, not for 15 years, just porridge which is soluble fiber.

Junk food, never 😝 it's just rubbish and I don't even eat a chip! Keep thinking natural and unprocessed. I always think that every cloud has a silver lining. When you've got a condition like IBS, it makes you eat healthier and you become healthy 😀 what's not to like? There's nothing better than feeling healthy.

Hi is that fresh or tinned pineapple.

Misspomfrey profile image
Misspomfrey in reply toBreathless1943

Hi

I use the tinned pineapple in its own juice, not syrup. I've not eaten fresh pineapple for years. The tinned seems to agree with me though. I just use one ring and the rest keeps in the fridge, I eat it every day along with other fruits. I have used the frozen one too which seemed nice but it tends to have the hard centre bits left on some of it.

Thank you for your reply I will give it a go. I do eat a handful of black grapes everyday and almond nuts.

Misspomfrey profile image
Misspomfrey in reply toBreathless1943

That's interesting, I can't tolerate grapes but most other fruits are fine, and I can only eat walnuts.🙂

Well I seen a specialist a few weeks ago,who was told me I needed a colonoscopy,to which I refused, and he handed me the NHS fodmap diet and told me to have a good life. But to get to the point it has grapes I can have and 15 walnuts or almond nuts a day on it. I chose the almond nuts with raisins because I have almond milk.

Misspomfrey profile image
Misspomfrey in reply toBreathless1943

Right.... That's fine as long as you can tolerate almonds and grapes. One person's IBS is very often not like another's. This is why we have to take an individualistic approach to it, it's frustrating at times but through time you live and learn. Some foods Ive had real bad episodes with over the years, but I try again from time to time, I don't give up because things can change over time and it depends on how your feeling mentally too. Good Luck and I hope you start to feel better soon.

Mucus tends to get produced to excess when you are constipated. Are you constipated? If so, its best to improve your diet and increase fibre. Unfortunately junk food is really bad for IBS.

Hi. Not constipated at all even with taking 1 loperamide a day. Lately im having diarrhea slightly with mucus.

I've been taking loperamide for nearly 40 years now, prescribed bymy GP. Initially one per day, then one every other day. They certainly help as if I stop taking then I get stomach cramps after a couple of days.

Well the only thing I can add here is my own experience. I have mucus all the time and I just wear pads in my knickers, not pleasant but necessary. I’ve had this problem now for over 12 yrs, worse than the mucus is the pain. I. Eat good food,I try to keep regular, but the pain over the years is now beginning to get me down. I had a CT scan with contrast a few weeks ago, same here came back ok. I’ve also had a feaces test which showed a very slight amount of blood. I had a colonoscopy about 8yrs ago,and never felt pain like it,and that was with a sedative which did nothing,BUT I do believe a colonoscopy is the best test you could have.

About a month ago,I seen a Collateral specialist,he suggested another colonoscopy and I said I could not take the pain again. His answer was well just go and live your life with no worry. Needless to say I’m still suffering great pain. Sorry to be so glummey just saying my experience, and I sincerely hope no one else is in my state.

Thanks for the reply and to hear your story.I had my colonoscopy done last april with sedative but was fully awake and honestly i never felt nothing no pain absolutely nothing but maybe things have changed these days compared to when you had it done.

When you pass mucus does it feel like you have got gas but it comes out like clear or coloured jelly. Its awful really and unpleasant and amazingly no doctor seems to be able to give my anything for it. I did feel like a lost cause for a while but yes im going through a very bad flare up at the moment. Ive had prostatitis for 7 months and had e coli in my bladder also so both ends have been absolutely hell.

Hi - I have the same problem and it is extremely stressful. Lately, I purchased a tub of Psyllium Husk at 700mg. Fortunately they agree with me, I take one in the morning and one late evening. It may be coincidence as this is only day 3, but there is an improvement so can only hope it continues to be a positive result.

Hi patricia. Thanks for the message back.Is that high fibre then the husk. I think i have tried fibogel before and it made mu ibs diarrhea worse.

All i get at the moment through the day is the feeling i have diarrhea but its clear mucus i have to release. Its awful.

Is that what you get also?..

Patricia9 profile image
Patricia9 in reply tomal444

It is a fibre, they are capsules and 'dry ' up any wetness in the bowel. Look them up and see the description - that's what I did and thought I'd try them.

mal444 profile image
mal444 in reply toPatricia9

I will order some today. Have you ever found out the reason you produce more mucus. The gp doctor has no idea as even the consultant either

Patricia9 profile image
Patricia9 in reply tomal444

No, I don't know the reason but it seems from posts here that it is a common issue rather than 'uncommon'. So for some I guess, its a condition of IBS or other bowel disorder. At least we're not alone with the problem and hopefully can find something that helps. If you do try them, take one initially in the morning and one in the evening and see if they suit you. Hope they do !

I get excruciating pain with ibs it has me in tears it’s that bad waiting to get another ct scan in pelvic area waiting list massive have said will take cancellation have chronic copd so getting to the bathroom is a bit of a challenge can’t get endoscopy or colonoscopy for other reasons two and a half years of this sometimes eight or nine times a day at the bathroom 72 years old taking it’s toll

Breathless1943 profile image
Breathless1943 in reply toHarrycrossan

Oh boy do I empathise with you. I’m 80yrs old and I’ve suffered this for over 12 yrs. obviously it’s got worse over time,I also cry to my husband who I feel sorry for because there’s nothing he can do for me.

I also have days where I just get to a stage like screaming,it also grinds me down. I spend most my days looking for answers and trying different ways around it. So all I can can say is I really do feel for you.

Breathless1943 profile image

hopefully this won’t sound to bad,but the only time I seem to be able to break wind is on the toilet. But the mucus can just come anytime,I usually say to my hubby my bums leaking again😄. But yes it’s like clear jelly. Personally I would not want anyone to go through the NHS like me. I’ve had every test they can do,I’ve seen Gastroenterologist from one end of the country to the other, sometimes out of desperation private. My GP is a waste of time. And I’m now just in limbo.

I can understand where you’re coming from because a couple of years back my hubby had prostate cancer, then he got sepsis from the biopsies,he was really poorly. I’ve had E. coli not to pleasant. But please don’t worry to much about the mucus because as unpleasant as it may be,it can’t be to serious or I wouldn’t be here.

I had the mucus too and it stopped after I took a 6 day bout of loose stools. I guess it cleared itself out.

I had changed my diet, which was already very restricted so this may have helped or the actimil.
