Morning Misery

Does anyone else have the following symptoms with their IBS? As soon as I wake up I need to get to the loo quickly and usually pass a normal stool. This is followed shortly after by explosive loose unformed stool. Some days this can happen about five times. It makes me so nervous about going out anywhere and I worry so much about it. I have toilet anxiety so really hate using public loos and hate the thought of being heard in there. I have had IBS for years now so should be used to it but it is so depressing constantly thinking what triggers things. I am lactose free and avoid so many different foods that eating out is a nightmare.

I have tried probiotics but they didn’t help at all. I think I just have to accept this is my life and just be grateful if I get any normal days!!

Hi! Starry56My episodes happen after lunch, ie breakfast-normal BM, light lunch-pain and explosive d. Not everyday but like you scared to go out in the afternoon just in case. The occasional times I have had to go out, thank God for Sainsburys!!!

Thank you for replying. Sometimes it just helps knowing you are not the only one suffering !

This explains what I experience exactly so you’re definitely not alone! So frustrating. The only way I’ve found to deal with it is to take Imodium the night before if I need to be anywhere early - just as much to help with the anxiety, as (like you) I hate using public toilets if I can help it!

I don't know if this will help, but like HB2203, I take one Immodium the night before but the first thing in the morning before any black tea or decaf, I eat plain Greek yogurt (I add peanuts or mixed nuts to it for more protein).

Most of the time that helps to stabilize me for the rest of the day (I found this out since I had explosive diarrhea every morning for 10 weeks following my third booster shot!). I found a direct correlation between the vaccine shots and new gastro-intestinal problems - they came 2 weeks after every shot.

I generally have the urgency to go in the morning, sometimes with a second trip a few hours later.

I am exactly like you. I had a colonoscapy about 4 years ago and found out I have diverticulitis. Was given a diet sheet to eat more fibre. Unfortunately I am still suffering, and I try to manage it by taking immodium before I go anywhere. I'm worried if I take them too often they might stop working. This is really getting me down as it's so debilitating. I've made an appointment to see the doctor again but I don't know that she'll be able to suggest much and I hate the thought of perhaps having to go through another colonoscapy. So you are not alone with this.
