hi All
I’m seriously thinking of having this surgery. Please would anyone who has had this share their experiences?
Honesty would be appreciated, negative, however bad, and positive.
Thanks very much

I have not. I do recall this coming up for. Try searching on "haemorrhoidectomy" as well as "hemorrhoidectomy".
Hi. Oddly i just looked into that aswell but it does say theres risk of infection and its quite expensive too . Im thinking ill put up with the discomfort for now. 🥴
I had it done back in November and honestly it was well worth it. Changed my life!
The recovery wasn’t the easiest. Make sure you’ve got strong painkillers and laxatives! But in my opinion it is well worth it.
Good luck!
Hello Jackie, I had this operation in 2004 and it lasted 10 years. 10 years of relief but then it comes back again! It was fairly pain free but you will need Lactlose for about a week afterwards and to have a good daily walk. Good luck in whatever you choose to do.
thanks very much dogandbone. It’s good to know that you had some relief, but I am sorry that They returned. I was wondering about recurrence. Would you have the surgery again?
Hello Jackie, I would have it again but my last Dr said they would not do that again when I asked sometime ago. I may ask again as I have a new caring Dr as the bleeding on and off is not nice. The op itself was ok what I expected, bit sore when you go for the first time. They would give you a laxative when you go home.I was only in 2 days. Good luck whatever you decide to do .
I had banding and it was a terrible decision. Now I have urgency anal pain and a scar in my rectum. Make sure you have a competent colorectal surgeon evaluating you before you do this. I had a general surgeon and he over stretched the hemorrhoidal mucosa. Don't me with your rectum it can cause nightmares.
HI Jackie, I too have external haemorrhoids that are not exactly painful but so sore. It stops me doing my normal daily things, even sitting is uncomfortable. I dread having the op. I already suffer constipation and need laxitives. So dread it. I thought banding was supposed to be fairly pain free. There is also an injection into them I have read about. Wishing you good luck in your decision.
hi Alloagirl thanks very much for your reply. Very sorry to hear about your external haemorrhoids, sometimes I can’t sit down either. I am having a good day today because I haven’t had any vegetables for two days! My IBS is mostly D and it seems to be the frequency which has exacerbated mine.
The banding process for internal haemorrhoids – I have a friend who also had banding, twice. The first time was pain-free but did not work and the second time it worked very well, but he had pain for a couple of weeks. You would think that it would be fairly pain free, but unfortunately not.
I have now made an appointment with the consultant privately so that I can discuss all the options. I have not heard of injections, so I will ask about those, thanks.
I hope that things improve for you.
I do have an internal haemorrhoid which I have had years but never bothered me. It’s since my OAB and taking Solifenacin which caused the constipation and the haemorrhoids. I would like to hear from someone who suffers constipation and has had surgery. How did they cope with that. I hope you get good information from your consultant. Would be interested to hear what he/she had to say. If you are willing of course.
Hi Jackie, I've had banding and a haemorrhoidectomy for internal haemorrhoids, so here goes! First port of call for internal piles would be banding, this was painless at first, but a few hours later I was in an awful lot of pain, so best take painkillers before the procedure. The pain subsides each day that passes. It's important to drink plenty of water for a week and eat plenty of fibre, do not strain when going for a poo. After about a week the shrivelled haemorrhoid will drop off and pass painlessly with your poo. Unfortunately, many years later I had another internal haemorrhoid, which I went for banding, the banding didn't work because of the pile size and just kept slipping off after a day or so.
The haemorrhoidectomy was the next option and done under a full anaesthetic on a day case basis. Once I came around there wasn't in any pain at all, I just wanted a cup of tea! I was given antibiotics, pain relief and fluids via a drip for several hours to rehydrate the body. From that point onwards you will pain relief, you are unlikely to go to the toilet for a poo for several days due to the after effects of the anaesthetic, you will also have trouble weeing (it's actually worse for a man); I found the best way is to do it in the shower with nice warm water running over you, this will start to get better after around 10 days or so. After 3 days you will need a poo, ensure that you have had plenty of pain relief beforehand and a laxative( Fybogel), you are going to feel that your insides are being ripped out of you, it's very intense, you must not push, you will probably bleed, you will never forget this pain! The pain when pooing starts to get a little easier after 10-14 days with roughly 5-6 weeks before not needing pain relief at each sitting. You will need a good supply of sanitary towels for the next 2-3 of weeks to mop up any bleeding that randomly happens. You will walk weirdly at first, but walking is good if you can manage it, but not too far and no random standing around, you may feel an anal dragging ache for some time. You should be fully recovered by 5-6 months, it is quite a long process but you will be able to get on with your normal life after 3-4 weeks with some adaptations. You will feel fatigued from the aching that is forever present. You must continue to drink lots of water and have a high fibre diet and you must learn not to strain otherwise you will at some point have to go through this all over again!
The operation was a success for me, if you have any further questions please ask and good luck!
Thank you very much for your detailed reply MatthewU. I really appreciate this. I probably have internal ones, but my problematic ones are external and prolapsed permanently.
I am sorry to hear that you had so much pain when pooing; I guess that this will always have to be the case given the sensitivity of the area, and the fact that the surgical knife has been wielded. This is one of the things that makes me feel I do not want the surgery.
But I am relieved to know that your operation was a success.
My question is - would you do it again?
Thanks.
Please bear in mind that this is my experience and so may be totally different for you. It was the most painful experience in my whole life and I’ve had two children. The pain was so bad when having a poo, that I used to bite my knees to try to overcome the pain. Eventually, of course, it did ease and I got on with life. I do have haemorrhoids again, but they’re nothing like before I had my op. Good luck with whatever you decide. I had my op in 2004.
Thank you very much for your reply, Maggiet.
I am so sorry that you had such terrible pain. It’s good to know that the pain eventually passed, but I am also sorry to hear that your haemorrhoids came back again.
I am seeing the consultant on Tuesday and the way I am feeling at the moment is that I am unlikely to opt for the surgery. I have avoided most vegetables for several days now and I am feeling a lot better. I miss vegetables but at my age, I think I can cope!
Thanks, again
