Curious question ibs /ibd issue

Good morning I’m new to this website and I’m curious to know if anyone has over 10 bowel movements a day? I am under the hospital waiting for a colonoscopy so they can advise what is wrong with my stomach. My usual is between 10 to 14 times a day loose stools. 1st thing is bad also after my evening meal which then affects me through the night. The consultant has given me Imodium but this really hurts my stomach when I take it and when I stop and also takes me two days for it to work now. It is really life debilitating and I do get down with it sometimes because I can’t do what I want to do as I constantly need a toilet nearby.

Thanks

You might want to take a look at the link below. It may be BAM (Bile Acid Malabsorption) if it is diarrhoea.

I'm sorry you have this going on Badbellybabe. It's miserable for you, and all I can really advise is to wait and see what happens with your colonoscopy. It's a pity Imodium isn't working well for you. Have you got the dose right do you think?

But I have IBS apparently (no inflammation, so not IBD) and times during bad flare ups, I have had to go to the toilet 10 times in a 24 hour period. The only difference is when my gut is empty, it slows down, and if I just eat hard boiled eggs and white rice and white toast for a couple of days it completely stops. So an actual bad flare up will last about 2 days day and night, but start to slow down on the 2nd day. But I can also get those low-grade flares , not as dramatic but a dratted nuisance, which go on for a few weeks when I really have to watch what I eat and eat as plain and bland as possible. Then for no reason it just settles down for ages and I'm normal!

Yes, it's horrible. I do know. But wait to see what they say after your colonoscopy.

I'm having lots of diarrhea right now too (in the middle of testing) , but instead of immodium, I'm using Tasectan (PharmaSwiss and Noventure in Barcelona) every six hours which is really helping. I just saw Tasectan Duo yesterday but haven't tried it yet. They create a film over the intestinal lining and help it heal (which Immodium doesn't do) but the Duo adds a probiotic to the mix. I live in Slovakia and it's available here and all over Austria, but I would assume it could be ordered online if it's not in the UK. Google it and you'll see what it can do better than I can explain it.

I believe the bivalent vaccine did something to my microbiome, but it's just a belief. Two weeks after the vaccine, I started having these problems, but I was also traveling so can't prove it.

I have sometimes 10 bm's a day but they are not watery and they are small as if I have obstructions. My biggest bm's are when I wake up in the morning but they start getting smaller and thinner. I have urgency all the time sometimes all I pass is gas. I've had diverticular disease for 12 years and I a colorectal surgeon said my problem is not IBS but just a bad sigmoid that needs to be removed. I'm scared as hell of surgery, but I may have no choice. Partial obstruction feels like IBS but it's not, however many GI's don't recognize it.

If you use psyllium twice a day, your stille might get thicker and less frequent. Sorry for my English, I am a Dutchman living in the Netherlands.

Have you had a stool sample tested for calprotectin out of interest. It good that you're booked in for a Colonoscopy as this at least will have a good look inside your colon xxx

I really do understand how you feel I'm exactly the same but Imodium does help me sometimes especially when I have to go out. I have tried probiotics and Saccharomyces boulardii but no relief. I'm at my witts end with this it is so depressing and disabilitating. I also have fecal accidents aswell they are so embarrassing and stressful and Ibs isn't even recognised as a disability.

No one unless you go through it understands how low it can make you feel. If I plan to go out I just stop eating for hours before hand as like yourself I have had accidents when I can’t get to a toilet in time. I hope things improve for you and thank you for your post.

I do exactly the same don't eat before I go out and take Imodium to feel less anxious. You can get a Can't Wait Card look on line it can help but some shops still say no to use their toilet. Hope you feel better soon.x

Yes it's awful that IBS isn't recognised as a disability. It is one of the most disabling conditions! How would these people who "make the rules" like even one week of it?? It is like having a tummy bug that doesn't go away!

I know it controls my life its awful I feel so ill when I have a flare it's frightening I have to cancel plans so often. This should be recognised and there is no cure.

I just wanted to say that I can totally relate to you on this subject as I have been suffering in a similar way since April 2022. I indeed had up to 10 bowel movements a day, mainly diahorrea which started in April 2022 after I caught a tummy bug at my place of work. Initially stool samples were sent which found my Calprotectin Levels were very high and have only started to come down in November 2022. My samples also indicated inflammation in my bowel too so was referred to gastroenterology for tests to rule out cancer. So far I have had tests on all of my intestines from basically top to bottom and only mild inflammation has been found. I have had a faecal Elastase test for my pancreas which was normal and I am now awaiting a bile malabsorption test. All of my tests have taken months as well as the results. I have so far been provisionally diagnosed with infectious IBS and asked to trial Mebeverine which has just given me more diahorrea and toilet episodes. I often have accidents at least once or twice a week although imodium does help but this only allows for a slight delay in bowel movements and frankly I dont want to have to rely on it all my life. I have found this very life limiting and debilitating, I just want to have a normal life and a normal diet. I havent had a normal meal or really left the house since April 2022, as I cant be away from a toilet. I am currently trying out Buscopan IBS Relief, I now go to the toilet once or twice a day but haven't had a normal stool or bowel movement since March 2022. I still always have loose or mushy stools which often deteriorates down to diahorrea. I have been on sick leave from my job in the NHS since April 2022 as there isn't the facilities to accommodate me with this unpredictable and unpleasant condition. I have lost a great deal of weight due to this condition and regularly take build up drinks as advised by my GP and Dietician. I see my dietician every 6 weeks but still struggle to put any weight on. I have been cutting out dairy milk since July 2022, my diet consists of bland food, some of which is dairy free and gluten free. I am currently living on chicken, jacket potato, toast, banana, dairy free yoghurts and soya based milkshakes. I have also noticed that I dont always digest vegtables or certain meats very well. I do think that I may be lactose intolerant as well which is the reason I have opted for dairy free and gluten free as i have discussed this with both my gastroenterologist, GP and dietician but my concerns have never been taken on board. This condition is really getting to me now, I need to be well enough to return to work by April 2023 otherwise I will have no pay and possibly loose my job. No one can live on fresh air unfortunately and I am frightened I will loose everything. I am now getting down with this as I have tried a low fibre diet and low FODMAP too, with no improvement of my symptoms. I feel at the moment the only way I can live is to not eat at all which isnt a viable option. So I can fully understand how you are feeling and fully relate to you. I do hope you get your colonoscopy soon, I waited 9 weeks for mine and this was still classed as an urgent 2 week rule referral. Also to top things off I damaged the discs in my back 5 days after my colonoscopy which I have found debilitating too. I have found all of the waiting around and deal with the condition very stressful which possibly hasnt helped matters. So would just like to finish by saying I fully understand you and you are definately not alone. Please keep us updated with how you get on.

oh my goodness you sure are going through it bless your heart. I really hope that they can find something to help you very soon. Yes it is so depressing and I have a hard time some days to smile but we both need to be positive and hopeful that the drs get to the bottom of these problems for both of us. Take care Sarah

Thank you for your lovely reply, I hope I get sorted soon too. I am still waiting for a test which has been on order for 6 weeks now, I am a little fed up of the waiting game. I do really find my condition quite life limiting so it is hard to stay positive. I think I am just trying to find my own balance with diet, even if that means limiting my food intake and finding medications that make my symptoms more tolerable on a day to day basis. I also think my GP and Dietician are a little lost to since I have no proper diagnosis after such a long period of time. I do hope that you get sorted quicker than me and get the answers you are looking for. Sorry for late reply I have been really busy this last week. Take care of yourself and keep smiling.
