Rectocele causing wind?

I was diagnosed with a "small" rectocele about 12 months ago when I was having a proctogram to investigate causes of obstructed defecation.

In addition to the inability to pass motions effectively I get lots of wind - despite being very careful about how and what I eat. I asked a bowel nurse if the rectocele was causing wind but she said it wasn`t and that wind is only caused by what you eat. I am doubtful!

I am finding this difficult as I never know if it is "just" wind or more, so I have to go to the loo to pass the wind just in case.

Hi janke, I was diagnosed with a rectocele in 2017, 2 small hemorrhoids and a fissure. Over the years I've felt it get worse so yesterday I went for a gynaecology appointment she said I had a small prolapse so has referred me to pfpt. Yes the rectocele does cause wind because the poo gets stuck in the pocket so you don't know if you need to pass wind or go to the toilet. I'm hoping the pelvic floor therapist can strengthen the rectum therefore stop the stool getting trapped I'll have to see how it goes. Good luck on your journey, oh forgot to mention I suffer with ibs too 😢

Thanks - I`m already seeing a specialist pevic floor physiotherapist - although the appointments are very few and far between as the clinic she runs alongside the bowel nurse only run once a month. It was found that my pelvic floor muscles were much too tight and also contracting when they should have been relaxing. Most of the work I have done with her has been to try relax those muscles especially when I am trying to pass a motion. My last appointment was 3 months ago when she was off sick so I only saw the bowel nurse who wasn`t much help. I was due to see her next week but she will be on strike so it will be just the bowel nurse again!!

Morning janke, it's surprising how many problems arise from prolapses 😢 are you in the UK? I've been watching a series on channel 4 on a Tuesday 8-9pm it's all about your body and poo problems, this Tuesday it was about the brain and gut connection, its really interesting if you can watch it 😊 or get it on catch up, let me know what you think 🤔 take care 🙂

Thanks - I am in the UK and knew it was on but had avoided watching as I didn`t want to inflict it on my husband! He is already far more involved in my bowel problems than he should be. Also, I suspected it would probably be more of the "eat fibre" advice that is handed out to everyone even though for many of us that makes things worse! However I did get as far as working out how to watch Channel 4 on Catch-up last night with the intention of watching it on my laptop on my own. Will let you know what I think

Hi janke, I totally understand that to be honest, fortunately I don't have a partner but I do talk to my daughter about it to the point I've chewed her ears off! Lol. my anxiety does play a part in my tummy issues and fibre does make it worse 🙃 I've lost weight messing with my diet 🙃 the main thing now is my perineum which is barely there and a lump that protrudes out most days 😢 lying down is the only thing that helps sadly 😥 Hooe you get some insight with the programme 🙂

I am female and aged 66 so well past menopause. I think this flatulence problem is being caused lower down ie in the rectum and I very rarely have other problems with trapped wind higher up etc
