The last few week or so upon waking I seem to have a lot of sharp pain in my stomach and sides, which particularly worsens the more I breathe in, this is relieved by releasing gas and I carry on with my day!
Is this common or typical of IBS or should I be concerned?

I have this too, in fact I have it currently, It concerns me but my gastroenterologist seems to dismiss my concerns. Easy for them to do though, its not them suffering from it.
Hi. Not sure if this is common but I suffer the same but in my lower back. I suspect in my bowel area. Like you it goes when breaking wind or a bowel movement. Mainly on a morning too. I've just learned to live with it as I haven't yet found a way of stopping it. Hope this helps
Pain from gas is very common in IBS. If the pain stops once you've released the gas, then you know that is where the pain is coming from. If we are stressed, this can disrupt the movement of gas through the system, so the body holds onto it. IBS can also sensitise the nerves in the gut, so the extra stretching of the colon by the held gas causes pain. The oversensitising of the gut can be due to a dominance of bad bugs in the gut (try Alflorex probiotic) or due to visceral hypersensitivity (from the brain/gut) connection, where the brain picks up normal activity of the bowel as pain.
I know how you feel i developed Diverticular Disease in 2017-18 i suffered with inflammation of the colon and had severe constipation and my abdomen blew up like a balloon . Unfortnate for me since then ive suffered with bloating iam full of gas most of the time this happens to about 25% of diverticular disease patients no matter what i do wit my diet supp;emets probiotics low fodmaps nothing works so i have to just live with it and it can get quite painful at times
I recently had a colonoscopy due to the intestinal pain i was getting. My specialist believed that the pain was possibly due to inflammation in my intestines and thought it may be IBD rather than IBS, but as you have described it was just from gas and there was no inflammation. The thing i noticed is that the gas pain is intermittent and mostly comes on when i first wake up and slowly goes away during the day. Certain foods really aggravate it too.
I've had IBS for over 2 decades now. With this disease anything goes, and does. Ironically I've just started experiencing this 2 weeks ago. Thankfully I'm single 😂 as I cannot believe how loud it is and how long each fart can go on for. In total id say it lasts around 3 minutes but seems like an eternity 😂. Unusually it never has a smell 🤔 It does hurt but only a little, and the pain stops as soon as the wind/gas stops coming out. I have Diverticulitis Stage 1, so not sure if this is related. On 2 occasions I did feel my spleen begin to sort of shake and got scared. This stopped when the wind/gas stopped coming out. I hope you get help as I'm going to request a face to face gp appointment. Please keep us posted. All the best 👍
