anyone suffer from tight abdominal, rectum, buttock and inner thigh / hamstring muscles? I have previously managed these on the assumption that it is pelvic floor dysfunction. Whilst the relevant exercises seemed to hold the pain and discomfort at bay for a while and enable bowel movements to relieve constipation, the pain is getting worse.

Has anyone else suffered from these type of chronic pains ? Could it be attributed to a mineral or vitamin deficiency, reaching the stage where the pain is unbearable and all the Dr. Does is prescribe Pain killers which partially mask the problem but provide side effects and do not treat the cause

Think about getting an opinion from a colo rectal surgeon and a gastroenterologist. I have had problems with both constipation and some leakage and was surprises to find that colo rectal surgeons treat this problem, at least in the US. They are able to do a complete exam to find out exactly what the problem is. In my case the treatment was biofeedback physical therapy. The PT is done in his office by his nurse practitioner. You also have to practice a lot at home and it is surprisingly difficult - not painful, but defo not fun.

many thanks for taking the time to come back to me, have seen the gastro guy and he acknowledges that my muscles do not work as they should but cannot explain the pain and tension felt throughout the whole of pelvis and extends to the legs etc.

Try the colo rectal person. I think gastros mostly sort of stop at the small intestine and colo rectals take over from there to the end. I am just hoping that the biofeedback exercises that I am doing will help. He told me that they can only produce a maximum of 70% of original strength. Part of my problem comes from an episiotomy, even though it was quite a long time ago.

it still could be bilateral sciatica. I know because I have it although my left side is far more painful than my right.

I have been seeing a sports therapist to try and sort this but it's a long process

I have cramp like pains in my legs and my Chiropractor says my hip muscles are tight. Went to see GP and she said maybe connected to anxiety and your IBS , take paracetamol. She also said relaxation exercises and exercise. Does not really help. Sometimes I feel because it is not just the case of writing a prescription the Gp does not know what to do and basically we are left to get on with it. I will keep doing the progressive muscle relaxation, where you tighten and relax your muscles as I know they do get tense, especially when IBS is bad although then you daren't relax your muscles. I keep a record of when I do the exercises so if I do go back to GP I have written proof. I hope you get some help soon. Take care x

I agree re GPs unless they can tick a box and give you some pills they are limited in their advice.

Seen numerous chiro and physio and the exercises provided relieve the symptoms but despite stretching everyday the pain and muscle tightness remains

Wondered if it could be a vitamin or mineral deficiency

This might seem like a stupid thing to say but are you sure the tightness is muscular? Just, I know in the past I've assumed tightness in my body was muscular and it turned out it was connective tissue instead.

I have similar. After 30 years of IBS mostly C, I was finally taken seriously last August when I paid to see a colorectal guy about pain and pressure feeling in my rectum, and left buttock pain (diagnosed with piriformis syndrome ages ago and there you go.....) As soon as I feel any wind, the sharp pain in my bum is unbearable - but unless I sit on the loo and force it out, I can't pass it.

He sent me for an anal manometry and ano endal scan and was assured this would be painless. Nothing inserted in there when you have tight anal muscles is painless!!! Apparently my muscles are tight and struggle to relax - which they can do nothing about. I had a hysterectomy and rectocele repair 13 years ago and it has steadily got worse ever since. Biofeedback was mentioned before I had the scan but not at my follow up - no idea where to source it. Sorry to be so little help.

my chyro had suggested pelvic floor dysfunction, which broadly speaking means that the pelvis never relaxes and is in a permanent state of tension.

It does make sense and Done lots of exercises but unable to really effect change but the exercises may work for you and it definitely does not make you feel worse.

Good luck

NB exercises available on the Google bible

A possible explanation could be venous insufficiency in the pelvis called pelvic congestion syndrome. Google it....

Have you ever considered Pudendal Neuralgia? I get pain from under my groin throbbing right up through my left buttock. I have no idea what caused it, probably overstretching or chronic constipation. I have months where I feel no pain, but am always aware of a weakness there and times when the throbbing returns. I’ve joined a Pudendal Neuralgia Facebook group and some of the sufferer’s stories are horrendous.

I'm having hard time distinguishing between obstructive defecation syndrome due to intrarectal intussusception and hypertonic pelvic issues. I have had many tests including mri defecography, anal manometry, CT scans, pelvic ultrasound etc etc. They do know I have intra rectal intussusception with mucosal prolapse. I do not have dyssynergia as I was able to easily pass the balloon, and all the media they inserted into my rectum. My symptoms are constant urge to have a bm, many times a lot straining only to pass a little bit of stool, therefore many long bathroom trips. Tenesmus is the worse of these symptoms as it feels like I can't even pass stool or gas like a trapped door. It causes horrific anxiety and mental stress. I pass more stools in the morning but in the evening the feeling gets worse. I uses laxatives and enemas when I'm backed up. My stools are mostly formed but very thin or flat at times. I also have diverticular disease, so the only options are Biofeedback, Botox injections or surgery (rectopexy). Nobody can tell me if any of these things work. Biofeedback and Botox I have not tried, Kegels help, fiber helps and some probiotics also help but they are definitely not a cure. I just need to know if these are symptoms of a hypertonic pelvic floor or obstructive defecation?
