Is it a common thing to get heart palpitations, missed beats, and then two beats almost together (arrythmia) because of a gripy belly and trapped wind?
I got constipated last weekend, which did resolve itself in 2 days with no major flare up of D. But ever since then I have this feeling that wind is trapped. Uncomfortable tummy, gripy pains, swelling lower tummy. and the heart beats are all messed up. I haven't passed as much wind as normal in the last few days, and have tried lots of things to loosen it up.
Does anyone get heart effects from wind in colon?
My upper stomach is fine. I have appetite and ate good food. Also I'm able to do normal things.
A doctor checked my heart last winter and she said it was fine. It never misbehaves at the doctor's!

I feel your or my pain to. There's nothing worse than gripey tummy, pregnant stomach, and all that pressure feels uncomfortable against the upper part of the stomach, I also have a Hiatus Hernia, and that gives me unpleasant feelings and heart beats that dont always feel normal. I also annoyingly with bloaty tummy have more urges to go darn wee. Trapped Wind is a really annoying, pain in the posterior . Not forgetting the amount of gas you need to expel, which makes people less that 10 feet of you, warp speed out the area. I tend to get a little anxious with whats going on, this can lead to anxiety which we all know makes heart beats and stuff go a bit on overdrive. Its good you had the check up, at least you know your ok in that way. There's not an awful lot you can do but stay away from diets that includes known gas producers. as Im sitting around a lot due to arthritic hips, I produce a lot of gas. Exercise is a great way to burn some if that away. I wish I could still do some jogging. My IBS was less when i was active, but not now, gas remains my biggest complaint, after meals, or late at night, usually goes away after loo early mornings, best of luck with that Luisa22👍
Thanks drax, It sounds like you have a few different things to contend with, and I hope some of all that eases up for you. It's true that a gentle walk can help shift wind, so it's a shame you find it hard to exercise.
I did try that earlier on today, but for some reason the walk made it worse! We can't win sometimes...
My gastric issues trigger my cardiac arrhythmias very often. I have atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia and when my ibs and or acid reflux are bad I can almost guarantee my heart issues will kick in.
Also on occasion when I eat, the mechanics of swallowing, will set my heart off into afib. All of this has been confirmed in tandem with my cardiac and gastric consultants. Seems to be tied up with my vagus nerve.
Even if you had your heart checked last winter if you are having irregular beats you should insist on more tests or at least a 24hr tape. Eptopic beats are harmless but better safe than sorry.
Yes, I should go back and get a monitor for 24 hrs. The problem is , it only happens when I have windy guts, and that comes and goes. But the doctor did say to come back if it continues regularly.
Very interesting topic. Thanks for raising it. This is something that I have suffered from on an occasional basis. I always thought that it was trapped gas bubbles exploding in the oesophagus, which is what it feels like to me. However, I have more recently tracked my heart beat by pressing on a main artery in my neck when this happens and it does seem to cause fluttering or ectopic (extra) beats. I've just done some research and the closest explanation I've come up with can be found in the following links:
To be honest it is not something that I've been too concerned about. I've had my heart checked for AF (atrial fibrillation) by my doctor (not in relation to these symptoms, but just a general check) and he said that everything was fine.
That's so interesting. Yes I heard that the heart is very close to the esophagus and reflux can trigger off arrythmia. I don't get reflux though. I had it once, winter 2020 and then it went away and I haven't had it since. It's good to hear you had a check and the doctor says it's fine.
I don't think it is just restricted to reflux, though. They talk about indigestion and I would have thought you could have a bubbling up of gas without the acid too, which would give the same issue. This is what was happening to me since I'm not experiencing any form of heartburn at the time.
I had palpitations when I had Covid. I looked it up online and it said that when your body is fighting infection this can happen Perhaps you had a virus rather than IBS when it happened
Yes, I had heart rhythm problems with Covid and after Covid too, in 2020. This time it didn't feel like a virus. I usually know when I have or am fighting off some virus because of the other ways I feel, like very 'off' but this time I didn't. It just seemed related to the wind in lower gut. Today it had gone and my heart rate was ok.
I've never heard of an Alivecor. Can I just buy one from a chemist's? Or do I need a doctor to give me one? I will have to look that up.
Today, it felt like I had an unsteady heart rhythm again. But when I took my pulse it was okay. It seems to match up to when my gut isn't 100% and my gut felt a bit off today. But there were no missed beats this time. I think I'm just tired from not sleeping enough last night.
I had a full blood test which showed no abnormalities. There was no remark from the Lab about my iron. Electrolytes were slightly 'out' but kind of sub-clinically, and not a red flag according to the report.
Hi Luisa22, I have missed beats and a few palpitations when my IBS flares up sometimes. I have always put it down to shallow breathing which I don't realise I am doing. I do breathing exercises and it seems to resolve. xx
