Anyone with IBS taking alendronic acid for osteoporosis?

Hello, I was diagnosed with IBS about 2 years ago and managed to get it under control last year by following the Low Fodmap diet. However due to some unnecessary antibiotics given to me over the phone by a GP suspecting I had diverticulitis it has all flared up again. I started Symprove 2 weeks ago and some days there has been some improvement and some it's been worse. I know that is to be expected but I am still getting a very distended and hard abdomen every day. 2 months ago I had a CT scan as the (private) doctor I saw thought I might have cancer. Fortunately all was clear but the scan showed that I had severe osteoporosis in my lower back. I was told I should start a weekly treatment with alendronic acid but I have been delaying starting while my digestive system is so off kilter. I have low stomach acid and a very sensitive system over all. Just wondering if anyone with IBS is taking alendronic acid without it upsetting their gut. Thank you!

Hello! I have IBS-D and took alendronic acid for two years for osteoporosis. I also take Symprove. The AA didn’t cause me any problems but I don’t have a low stomach acid problem. Try the AA one week and see what happens but follow the instructions - you need to sit upright for half an hour after taking it with a lot of water. Also take a calcium and vitamin D supplement (I take Calceos which was prescribed by my doctor).

I have steroid induced osteoporosis and was prescribed AAcid. I found it made my reflux and acid stomach worse so stopped taking it after a few months. You should try it for a week or two just to see how you react. If you have low acid you should be fine. X
