I was diagnosed with UC about 20 years ago and have been in remission for a while but have constipation. I'm prescribed Mezavant XL and docusate sodium, when I remember to take them.
I've also been taking slippery elm and psyllium husk more often as prefer to take this in an attempt to keep me regular.
Has anyone else ditched the prescription drugs for more natural remedies and supplements?

You should keep to your daily maintenance meds ( like pentasa)To keep it suppressed. You could end up with a big flare up that cannot be controlled by meds alone. This would mean a stay in hospital to calm it all down with a drip. It can take a bit of trial and error to get the meds and dose right initially so please don’t slip
prescription drugs haven't worked for me.senna hasn't worked . miralax hasn't worked for me. i took phillips caplets for a long time and they were great. then they stopped working. i don't think fiber is good for me. i take a bottle of magnesium citrate liquid at night. i have diarrhea in the morning. at least i go.
I don't have colitis but I had an onset of IBS (non-inflammatory) and have not been symptomatic for a long time. At the time, I was using a fibre supplement with slippery elm, etc. (Fiber Smart by Renew Life) that helped with regularity, and I was also using a probiotic (one by Dr. Mercola). At the time, a gasteroenterologist had recommended the Align brand of probiotics and had given me a few samples. I've heard of other probiotics helping with regularity ... for instance, Jarrow-dophilus EPS. With probiotics, I think one might want to try different brands to see what works ... looking at reviews of products on Amazon can help.
