Lots of gas/bloating causing lump on right side of abdomen, should I be concerned?

Hey guys, I'm on a restricted gluten free and lactose free diet. This has sorted out my bowel habits, 2/3 a day of normal bowel movements which is wayyyy better than it has been.

However, the last few days I've had lots of excess gas after evening meal and it's been more uncomfortable than usual. I've also been getting a strange lump on the lower right side of my abdomen that seems to appear with gas and then ease back and then appear again.

Does anyone else have this? Should I be worried and get the lump checked out? It's not constant and I only really notice it in the evenings with gas and a bit of bloating.

Thanks, Simon

Have you been diagnosed with IBS? If so, take a look at the FODMAP diet. As to the lump, if it continues to be there, you should get it checked.

Hey there thanks for replying. Yes been diagnosed with IBS, not had a colonoscopy but on a waiting list for one. Had stool tests, blood tests and numerous consultations. Been on FODMAP and established lactose and gluten were the key ingredients after reintroducing foods back in.

Largely bowel movements have been way better but just had this lump in the last week, it only "livens up" when I have gas, it's not even noticeable the rest of the time and causes me no issue. Think I'll ring my GP in the morning to be safe though.

You have tested negative for h pylori? Yes!

It's always the best option to see your GP about things like that. Good luck.

Hi Simon,

I came across your post as I have been searching for an answer to a problem that sounds similar to your own.

I have had IBS for years with chronic constipation, have an hiatus hernia, lactose intolerance and some motility disfunction, .The latter was diagnosed about 17 years ago ( I was told it would worson and think it has)

I now have 7 spinal fractures which has caused a loss of height amongst other things.

The problems with the spine have gradually caused problems under my right rib, and made bowel problems worse, in that constipation can be a real issue.

Last year I had 3 of my fractures in a space of 5 months this reduced my already low body weight to below 6 stone.

I wanted to give you this background to help explain what I have found found out and to see if you can relate in any way to what I am experiencing.

Last year I noticed when laying on my back a lump pushing up to the right of my belly button it moved and went to the left then when I touched it went down. I was horrified and wondered what on earth it could be (it was not painfull) my husband said he thought it was gas and with not having much weight on me I was able to see it.

I thought this was a reasonable explanation and have since avoided looking because it is not nice to see.

The last 3 weeks I have had gurgling and rumbling in my stomach that will not quieten down it is so loud I have to resort to putting my headphones on!!!

I have so much gas and do not know what the cause is, although I have begun to drink oat milk and to find out if this is the culprit have not had any for 2 days now.

Last Thursday I had gas and some discomfort and had been constipated for a few days.

I was so upset because on my left side from my belly button curving outward was a long bulge when touched it felt hard and was also painful.

My husband looked because I could not bear to see it and said it was my intestine and was most probably food moving through.

I have been so worried about this.

I have a dietician who I have spoken to about it and has suggested a few changes in the diet.

Today I spoke to a nurse who treats people with osteoporosis.

Her thoughts are that it is the stomach being squashed and either gas or food moving through and can be seen because of low body weight ( even though my stomach is bloated) the noises she says are more audible also because of the low body weight.

This does make sense to me and I was wondering if your BMI tends to be on the lower end??

I am sorry for such a very long reply but this problem has had me so worried all kinds of things have gone through my mind.

I had a colonoscopy in March last year that came back all good and also a gastroscopy which showed bile rflux.

I have a follow up app next month so will be bringing these issues up then also.
