Colonoscopy

Just back from docs, have had a lot of mucus, so after internal anus check and found blood have been referred for two week colonoscopy. No diarrhoea, stools always solid, wondered what is causing all the mucus. Doc also requested Faecal Calprotectin and Faecal Immunochemical Tests. I had a clear NHS Bowel Screen in December, so instead of waiting for eight weeks I now have two weeks to worry. Anyone else had mucus and solid stools? Thanks x

So it looks like your doctor is following the correct guidelines. Cam I ask how old you are? It depends also if you have a close family history of bowel issues. I suppose most of us have some of these. Any blood found I think is a referral to colonoscopy if your over a certain age. I was 45 and had one day of blood ( bright blood) piles! Had the sigmoidoscopy and that was it. Your two week wait referral is quite standard with certain finds but really, only less than 5 percent are cancer. You probably would also have had blood test and more concerns would show in these like iron levels. Bloody mucus can be associated with colitis or infection. Mucus can also be linked to constipation. Diverticula is common over a certain age. Let us know how you go

Thank you for your post. I'm 75! Been to the loo three times this morning, no Diarrhoea but soft. Now have a stomach age, and feeling sorry for myself. Diagnosed as having IBS 100 years ago when I had loads of tests and nothing clear was shown. Certainly not constipated. Also woke up feeling sick. Got a letter from the docs to book on line, thought it a bit strange as I was on a two week slot, it turned out that was for my earlier telephone appointment, they called me in for a face to face and changed it to a red flag when GP found blood on her finger after internal, and the hospital will contact me. Less than a month ago I was referred on two week list for post menopausal bleeding which was clear, hope this one is OK. Strangely I am diabetic and had a range of blood test last month for a check all OK including FBC. NHS bowel screen in December clear. I feel completely wrung out. Just want to hide somewhere. Thank you for your support x

Hi - hospital just rang this morning, appointment with the consultant a week today. No colonoscopy, you have to see the consultant first and if he thinks you need a colonoscopy you get one, I suppose it makes sense. Still passing mucus and blood. Thank you so much for your support. I hope your husband is feeling better, I live on North Bedfordshire, perhaps you go straight to the colonoscopy where you are, or perhaps its COVID related. Thank you so much. GG x

Hi, I live in South Yorkshire but I think it’s the same protocol wherever you are.He spoke to a consultant before his colonoscopy. If you do need one, don’t worry about it as it really isn’t as bad as I thought it would be.Hope you get sorted out xx

You can tend to get more mucus if you are on the constipated side. Your intestines can produce more to help ease the constipation. Mucus is also required to support your gut lining. It is good that you are getting the investigations done so you know how to proceed.
