Hi All... I am 47 and was prescribed Pantoprazole for stomach ache and Acid Reflux. I took it once a day for 3 weeks and then I was told by the doctor to do twice a day... My stomach ache was once every few days but now it an everyday thing. The pain is now radiating to be upper back and flanks. Severe neck and upper back pain also... Anyone else have this with these meds?

IBS/ PPI/ Pantoprazole
Sometimes reflux has an underlying cause. Have this been looked into? Have you, or did you before taking the ppi have any other symptoms?
I did have some stomach pains that started around Aug... I already had a colonoscopy and endoscopy with biopsy but nothing other than mild acid reflux showed up. But ever since I started this PPI it was a constant daily pain in my upper stomach and then radiating to my back and shoulders.
Hi I take ppi’s only one per day in the morning. I stopped taking them for 2 weeks because I was having a colonoscopy, my stomach was ok while I wasn’t taking them but I restarted them as my reflux was bad. I think it’s a double edged sword with these things. I think you should maybe contact your doctor for some advice, they are a very complex thing and don’t suit all, sorry I can’t be of any help, just wanted you to know your not alone and I hope you feel better soon
Yes, I can't take any of the PPI's like Omeprazole or the one you are on. They all have Manitol in them which can be a laxative if you happen to be sensitive to it. It gave me severe pain and it also caused me to lose my sense of taste which was replaced by a vile sour taste. If it causes you pain then I would advise stopping it.
Thank you for the reply. I did stop taking it over 10 days ago and my pain is so much better. I have a follow up on the 15 with the GI. Will update once I see him.
I was on Omeprazole for a long time and it does awful things. I read that this drug was only passed as safe to use for short periods of time, 40 days I read that PPI's work by stopping all the acid producing cells in the stomach which is good for reflux etc, but unfortunately, there are other acid producing cells in the body which have important functions. I read that some of these cells line the arteries and they create a Teflon like coating helping to stop plaque building up keeping us heart healthy. Switching off these cells has an opposite and damaging effect and the cells act like Velcro holding plaque and furing up the arteries. I was astonished when I read this! Why do doctors push these drugs on us? At present, with the recall of Zantac there aren't any other prescription medications. The best remedy is to eat burnt toast or ginger biscuits when you get acid and for me heartburn is eased by a glass of cold water. If bad, then Rennies or Tums . So glad you came off the PPI's.
I can’t believe your post. I was on 40mg of Pantoprazol for 3+ months and I had a very sour terrible taste that kept coming on. My Dr. advised to double the dose saying it was acid reflux. I never ever had this type of issue before I started this drug. My family begged me to stop the drug recently which I had to wean myself off of that wasn’t easy. Amazingly that terrible taste went away. I was in misery for 3 months and can’t believe what that crap did to me. I looked everywhere for this type of side effect and was waiting to confirm that I’m not crazy. Just so glad to be off it.
