I have been diagnosed with post infection IBS and prescribed 90 days of Omeprazole 20mg once a day. My gastro doctor said to complete the medicine and that I do not have to wean off of it.
Has anybody else here been prescribed similar and no weaning off? It has helped with the spasms and upper left quadrant pain. Also , no heartburn. Also, has anybody here gotten nauseous with this med?
Thank you

Hi I'm using Omperzole, Over here in the UK it maybe for different reasons for taking these. I'm taking these to help settle the stomach due to me taking another medication called Naproxen. I was involved in a car accident just under 3 years ago and I have a shoulder injury which these medications help towards. But they do also help with my IBS. You mentioned that it doesn't give you Heartburn. Well I don't know what you take for that but I also take Peppermint oil capsules to help with the IBS and if and I do say I get Heartburn then these also help. I find that taking the Omperzole does help with the stomach because if you take medication for other conditions and you don't take this first then your going to give yourself other health problems. Like if I take Naproxen without it then I will cause other bowel problems. Regards.
It certainly can produce nausea, and did when I took it! Some people find that they cannot do without it, despite correcting the suggested factors which exacerbate the tendency to reflux, including excess weight , and excess alcohol intake.
One aspect of taking PPI’s is that it can adversely effect your gut microbiome with longterm use, and levels of blood magnesium, so combining it with a reputable probiotic , and getting a good source of minerals are important.
You might be able to manage on a maintenance dose of 10mg. I assume that you have been tested for Heicobacter Pylori.
I have both IBS and IBD and have taken omeprazole for acid reflux on and off for about 7 years. I say on and off because I know that long term consistent use is not good.... I take 20mg twice a day for a couple of weeks if my reflux is bad, then take 20mg once a day for another two weeks or so (up to a month). This works so then I stop taking omeprazole for a few weeks/months until I need them again. A GP I used to have recommended this option to me as she had bad reflux and told me it was how she handled it. 90 days is not that long so you should be fine with them.
When I had to stop, I just completely stopped all carbs, and it worked. Now I use Luvos Ultra from Germany (available on their website or Amazon) and have no trouble at all with acid reflux.
Hello, I have been taking omeprazole for 8 years if i try to come off i am in terrible pain with indigestion i have given up trying to leave it so to feel comfortable i take 10mg each day.
I was on Lansoprazole which is also a PPI I just had it short term. But I did not just stop it I cut it down to every other day then every 2 days ,3 days etc. over about 2 weeks. When i stopped it all together it did make me feel about strange for a few days. I could not take Omeprazole as it caused me to have vertigo after just 1 tablet. Everyone reacts different to tablets so i always introduce new meds slowly and when I know i do not have any work etc. like at the weekend. In case it makes my IBS-d bad.
Thank you. I hope it has been helpful in you feeling better. I'm on it for 90 days for acid reflux and post infection IBS. Have a good day my friend.....
I also recently got my blood's taken because I have fibromyalgia as well but the doctor also found out that I'm anemic. So on medication for that as well
Hi there, that medication is for acid reflux or Gerd. It doesn't have any real effect on pot infectious ibs. I have that and NOTHING has helped after constantly trying many things, many doctors for 5 plus years. Best wishes
