Hi,I actually posted on here a couple of days ago,I had only just started them and after only 2 days and they gave me vile heart burn which I havd never suffered before....I know it doesn't answer your question but it just made me wonder if it was something to do with the medication

Hi I didn’t suffer heartburn either before I started these awful things but being off them the acid rebound is even worse

in reply to LEENOL48

Lansoprazole didn't agree with me so was trying these to protect my stomach from ibuprofen, which I am taking at the moment, but since I took omeprazole my tummy has been playing up something rotten.....and I only took it for 3 days! It really knocks you off your feet doesn't it

Good morning, when I changed GPs the first thing he did was to take me off lanoperzole and he told me it can make IBSD worse. I was an omperazole prior to this. Claire xx

It's used to prevent it so would make sense it's started if you've come off itI used to take it but after taking enterosgel was able to come off it

Yes the acid rebound is awful... i tried to quit and i was in pain but the pain got less with diet and digestive enzymes from the brand solgar. Plus a lot of vitamins, probiotics and 3 omega fatty acids...

Hi been for it but negative had the Heidelberg test and diagnosed with low stomach acid I also had a barium swallow which was normal and no sign of reflux so why they want to put me on omeprazole I don’t know

Just out of curiosity if you have been diagnosed with low stomach acid then why have they asked you to go on omeprazole which is acid reduction medication?

Do you think omeprazole could have caused low stomach acid

LEENOL48 profile image
LEENOL48 in reply to AMerchant

Exactly this is what I asked the doctor and he said forget about that for the moment just take the omeprazole I was only on the omeprazole for about a week before I had the test

Yes, it will be like that for a while. Your body has been used to something stopping the acid production , now the acid production goes into overdrive. It will settle down but you need something to help while your stomach adjusts. I used to take Zantac which was brilliant but it's now out if production. The only things available are tablets like Rennies, Gaviscon or Tums etc. See which ones works best for you.

LEENOL48 in reply to Carlettejaque

I have some gaviscon so I will try that how long does this last for

Carlettejaque profile image
Carlettejaque in reply to LEENOL48

Can be quite awhile, it all depends on the acidity of your stomach. Mean time avoid acidic foods like tomato, lemon and spices. Also, greasy foods can promote acid and acid reflux. Toast and biscuits are great for absorbing acids.

I had similar acid rebound symptoms so I am now trying to gradually reduce the daily does. Was on 40mg for 1 week as part of the h pylori eradication therapy then 20mg for 2 weeks and now 10mg.

Still getting acid rebound effects sometimes tightness and pain in upper abdominal or lumpy feeling in the throat. But this improving slowly

It’s been just over two weeks now so I suppose I just gotta ride it out

I was put on Omeprazole last December after chronic pain in chest and ongoing gastritis and heartburn, thought it was my heart went to A&E but not heart. Had CT scan for suspected blood clot, was clear. So they diagnosed Gastritis & possible ulcer gave me Omeprazole 40mg. It did calm down a bit but was expecting for it to heal and get better so I could come of medication after 6 months. Dose was reduced to 20mg daily, but still had to take Gaviscon when taking it some days, thought this cant be right. Feeling better I started to wean myself off it gradually, as read that is what you have to do to come off it. But immediately felt worse terrible pain and loss of appetite. Being in lockdown didn't help as couldn't see GP, phone calls only. Anyway after last phone call in September, I told him that I was worried could I still have ulcer or something worse! why haven't I healed? he said "well some people have to be on it for life!!!! but also said and for some people Omeprazole just seem to doesn't work, you can try Esomeprazole, which is similar but might work better. ( is much more expensive) Nexium brand you can buy OTC. Why hadn't he told me this earlier Iv'e been on it for 9 months not getting any better!!! Anyway I started on Esomeprazole 20mg in September and since then have had no more symptoms and feel fine. So now I'm wanting to start to try to come off that. Will start with having 20mg one day and 10mg next for a week then go down to 10mg a day for a week, then take on alternate days and see how I go. PS. I believe the original cause of my stomach inflammation was taking Ibruprofen regularly after breaking my ankle in summer 2019 , I wasn't strict in taking them only after eating or with food!!!!

Hi. How was your inflammation diagnosed. I had endoscopy in October which showed no ulcers, gastritis or any inflammation. Biopsy found h pylori bacteria and I was put on triple therapy. Not sure how I can have the bacteria but no damage internal but have acidity. The doctor said I might have non ulcer dyspepsia

Omeprazole 20mg caused constipation but 10mg doesn't although it less effective

I had a barium swallow which was normal and I have been diagnosed with low stomach acid after the Heidelberg test so am a bit confused

After 6 months in June and no improvement....GP said no point referring me for investigation e.g. endoscopy during lockdown as my case not serious enough! Waiting lists too long. After 6 months was advised to do poo sample for Pylori Bacteria testing but told me would most likely come back negative even if positive as being on Omeprazole can cause false negative. It came back negative so still done know if its Pylori Bacteria.

Interesting. My symptoms started in June and the GP put me on omeprazole 20mg. After about 3.5 weeks symptoms hadn't improved much he asked for h pylori stool test which like yours came back negative (becauseI was on omeprazole). He referred me for endoscopy and said I should continue with omeprazole. Which I did and finally got a date for endoscopy end of October. I made sure I stopped Omeprazole for 11 days before endoscopy. Whilst endoscopy was normal the biopsy came back h pylori positive although no ulcer or gastritis was found.

I had to go on heavy dose of antibiotics and PPI for a week. Now trying to slowly wean of omeprazole but having silent acid reflux intermittently.

I would say insist on endoscopy and then at least once a week keep calling the hospital and they will eventually give you a date

I did have an endoscopy back in august but it just wouldn’t go down have previously tried years ago and it was unsuccessful just something that I can’t do maybe I have two h pylori tests and they were negative

Did you experience any weight loss? I have lost about 8 or 9 kg since June !

No I’ve actually put on half a stone

in reply to wendy6

Has your GP ever sent you for a gastroscopy?? Should really to see if you have an ulcer... Ive tapered down to 10mg Omeprazole a day now and will now start a fortnight of every other day. Been on it for years and it’s hideous stuff-literally thinned my hair!! Good luck

Hi I had an endoscopy a few months ago but couldn’t get it down so I had a barium swallow which came back normal with no sign of reflux I’ve got a ct scan tomorrow

Yes GP finally referred me for a Gastroscopy in September when I told him symptoms not improved by Omeprazole after being on it for 9 months!! He changed me to Esomeprazole as well and that has worked much better not had any heartburn pain since. The referral was Choose and Book system where you go online and choose nearest hospital etc. No options available so had to phone. Was told that such a long waiting list they would phone me when anything came available and to expect a very long wait! So now Im considering trying to reduce Esomeprazole and try to come off it. Is difficult as still don't know what it anything is wrong with me might be better now?????

I was on Omeprazole for one month to deal with suspected silent reflux, it helped but a few weeks after stopping it came back, I don’t get heartburn but feeling of sore swollen throat and occasionally can feel the acid going up my throat. I’d read about rebound from Omeprazole so am trying to ride it out, cutting out coffee seems to be helping and limiting acidic foods. I once took two Omeprazole on advice of doctor and had the worst migraine afterwards

I definitely had more pain , nausea and indigestion whilst on them , now been put on Esomeprazole seems to be better , not cured but less bad days
