Ibs omeprazole?

Hi, wondering if anyone can help me. I've had ibs since I was 13 years old but my stomach has always been "bad". My usual thing is low cramps and the runs, usually set off by stress, lack of sleep or too much bread or grease.

2/3 months ago I started to get a burning pain in my upper right abdomen, it's never been agony, but really uncomfortable. For 3 weeks, I couldn't eat anything but brown bread and chicken and I felt rubbish. I was having terrible panic attacks several times a day and spent most of my day feeling like I was on the verge of throwing up.

My doctor assumed gallstones, I had blood tests and scans, no gallstones. Liver and pancreas are also fine. But the pain keeps coming back. Sometimes it's all my arms too. Doctor then said, it's your anxiety. But the pains were happening when I wasn't anxious. Doctor then said IBS, I said this was nothing like my usual IBS symptoms. Doctor prescribed Mebeverine and sent me on my way. I was fine for 3/4 weeks and then it started up again. Now doctor has put me on 20mg of omeprazole a day. I'm only on day two, but I'm confused as to what the hell is going on with me. I am tired, anxious and I just want an answer.

Has anyone had any of this with their ibs?

Thanks in advance, sorry for the rant

Xxx

Hi, yes I have had this type of pain, it has been in my right upper quadrant and has on occasion gone into my right arm and my fingers, I've also had scans for gallstones, etc which was all ok, I saw a Professor in gastroenterology and I was told it was muscular, of course I didn't believe that, this was approx 2 years ago. I now have a diagnosis of IBS and acid reflux, which I am currently having a really bad flare up for nearly 2 weeks, I had to visit my GP yesterday as again it was first thought it was gallstones, after being examined my GP said it was IBS and acid reflux, my symptoms currently are very bloated stomach, and after eating it's worse, feels like I can't breathe properly I'm so bloated, dull ache in my right side and between my shoulder blades, but not had much pain just dull aches, also really hoarse voice, and sweats, I'm taking lansoprozole, and acidex but don't seem to be doing much good, I haven't tried Buscopan yet not sure I should take all these meds at once although my GP prescribed them, I also suffer quite bad with anxiety, I do think it makes things worse, which my GP confirmed, I am currently trying to find ways to control my anxiety, but it's difficult when you don't feel well to start with. Hope this helps 😊

Pains in the arms and shoulders sounds a little unusual for IBS, you might want to look into whether you might have TMJD or some other connective tissue disorder - TMJD is known to co-occur with IBS and I believe it was the cause of my own IBS.

Could you possibly explain what TMJD is please? xx💜

It's a connective tissue disorder, often caused by dental surgery or injuries and typically affecting the jaw or shoulder area. In my case it seems to have built up till it affected the connective tissue all round my body, and I have funny lumps of it in a variety of places, and aches and pains from it pressing into places it shouldn't. There is more information at tmj.org/

That sounded like a rant of frustration, something a lot of us have felt.

The lining of my stomach was stripped before I started walking and have never recovered. I have good periods and bad periods. Six years ago I was finally diagnosed with IBS after 2 massive doses of antibiotics, now in my late 60's. Currently having my biggest flair up ever, all due to stress and anxiety compounding itself making it worse.

I never associated pain in the bones of both arms with IBS, but it starts to make sense as does the abdominal pains I get from time to time. No amount of complaining to my Dr's have ever gotten an answer.

I use Omeprazole as and when I need it, 20mg twice a day as required. It helps but does not stop the stomach acid getting back up into my mouth. My lips get sticky and peel from it. Oddly this doesn't happen when I am sleeping. I use Omeprazole sparingly as it too has side effects that need monitoring for me. It can cause polyps down the throat and beyond, it can also effect kidney function and cause constipation, and more.

One week ago I struggled to eat or drink and a cup of tea would blow up the abdomen uncomfortably. I'm now on the mends, yet again.

Chicken wholemeal sandwich is my go to food when the gut goes bad. I actually warm it which seems to help. I also consume digestive enzymes which also help by digesting the food quicker. There are some natural ones so no need to find tablets.

I'm discovering just how much stress or anxiety does effect the gut, never realised the extent to which it can get. Always had my moments but this time it is full on and solely responsible for the flair up. Something else I need to watch out for now.

I have been on a CKD based diet for a year or three which seems to help the IBS, until stress pops it's head up. I think that the lack of highly processed food and herbs and spices with no salt or sugar is the main reason for my IBS being under control, apart from stress. I do not use sugar or salt replacements as they help kill my kidneys with the man made substitutes in them are not able to be processed through kidneys. Fine if you don't have CKD. I stay way clear of no sugar soda/soft drinks and no longer guzzle anything but water. I was addicted to Coke Cola to my detriment. Wholemeal bread being one of very few processed foods I eat.

Essentially I stick with fresh and natural unprocessed foods and generally feel better for it. I also limit the amount of red meat I eat, CKD requirement. Where ever possible I don't eat precooked or processed foods and try to stick to my own cooking with fresh foods and fish or poultry.

Makes me unsociable at times but I can't afford to consume anything that I don't know what it specifically contains. Break the rule and pay the price is my option.

I don't know how you control stress other than to stay clear of a stressful situation, easier said than done I'm afraid.

How did I get to where I am today. I stripped back all the food I consumed to basic bland food and started from there. Tried one food at a time to see what the reaction was until I had a list of does and don'ts. I don't recommend my diet to anyone as it isn't wonderful but it is what I have to do to be comfortable. You will find your own requirements as time goes on, IBS can be quite different for everyone. IBS is a generic term used when they don't have a diagnosis for you. It is real but covers a multitude of complaints.

I felt I was left on my own and have done a lot of research and finally come up with what suits me, probably what most severe IBS people have to ultimately do.

Good luck.

Hello. I have just been reading your post re Omeprazole. I was on omeprazole but was taken off it as one of the side effects although rare is anxiety. I felt awful and nobody believed me at work that it was omeprazole (I am a nurse by the way) If you look on the information re omeprazole it is listed. My GP advised never to take it.
