Hi all, sorry to keep bothering people on here but I’m at my wits end. For about a week now I’ve had bad bouts of heartburn, I’m on lanzaprozal and take gaviacon. My question is is it Normal to have regular bad heartburn, it seems to come up my throat and is quite painful. Just don’t know what to do anymore, thank you for reading

The meds you are on don’t seem to be working effectively. Your GP needs to find the route to the course of your symptoms. And that just might be going for an endoscopy? Lots of issues associated with reflux, and anxiety can be one of them?

Have you tried mastic gum and also try manukau honey straight ?

Thank you for your prompt reply, I have been on this medication for about 2 years now, I have a few stomach issues like reflux and divaticulitus and a hiatus hernia but the last 2 weeks have been really troublesome, I’m waiting for a gastroscopy but because of the current situation with covid there is a huge backlog, I will definitely try the gum and Manuka honey, thanks again, stay safe, stay well

Maybe look at what you’re eating and when. Eg best to eat earlier on an evening that late. I have bile acid malabsorption (take cholestyramine) and also had reflux and took omeprazole for a few months which sorted it. Maybe the med you’re on doesn’t suit you and try another. Also low fat diet, nothing spicy is usually the first advice given.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I have reflux, which I’ve had for sometime, I’ve also got a hiatus hernia, I’ve been on lazaprozol for about 2 years now but the last 2 weeks or so have been really bad, I’m waiting for a gastroscopy but due to the current situation it’s going to be a long time as they have a backlog😞, I also suffer from divaticulitus and anxiety, so all in all I’m a mess. I’m going to change my diet a lot and see if that helps, stay safe and stay well

It’s awful when you have a lot of different things going on, I have a lot of different issues and take different meds it’s a nightmare as you don’t know what issue is causing what! Hope you get an appointment soon x

The first, and most important, point to realise is that when you feel that burning, your esophagus is having its lining burnt and, subsequently, destroyed, so you must contact your GP. If the Lansaparole has stopped working there are other drugs, like Omeprazole, which can be used instead, and your GP will know which is the best for you.

Don't worry about bothering anyone because you aren't!!! It really sounds like you need to see a Gastro doctor and get an Endoscopy done. You have serious Gerd but there may be going on than just that. I hope you will ask your doctor to send you to a specialist. Please let us know what you find out.

I'd recommend keeping a food diary. I'm on lanzaprozal but I still need to be mindful about what I eat, and when. For example, I can't have any soy products after 6pm without being up all night with acid-reflux. There's an ingredient in some cheap bread or pasta that create an a painful gag response. That said, lanzaprozal shouldn't be taken with other meds like gavicon. If you feel you need to, then it's not working and you definitely should see the GP. As others have commented, burning of the esophagus is nothing to dismiss.

Yes. Heartburn seems to be a major factor with IBS. All omeprazole type medications really make my IBS so much worse. Cant take Gaviscon either. I used to take Zantac but it was withdrawn about a year ago. Shame as it was the very best thing for heartburn. The best natural remedy is toast to soak up the acid. A glass of water helps and a very good remedy is strong ginger biscuits. Don't take anything with peppermint in it as that seems to make it worse.

Which brand if you don’t mind me asking? If I drink ginger that seems to set me off? How do you find eating wheat since your eating ginger biscuits? I find eating to much sugar sets me off as well.

I am dairy and yeast intolerant but not wheat. I make my own ginger biscuits. If I drink ginger tea it gives me belly ache.

One and a half teaspoons cinnamon

Teaspoon baking powder

4 teaspoons ground ginger

360grms plain flour (self raising can be used if you desire more of a cookie texture. If you do this add 2 minutes to cooking time)

175grms demerera sugar

100grms margerine (flora light)

I large egg

8 heaped dessert spoons of golden syrup

Mix flour, cinnamon, baking powder and ginger powder together. Add marg and rub in to a breadcrumb consistency. Add sugar and mix in. Add egg and syrup, mix together, bring it together and knead into a ball. Place on a well floured surface and roll out to biscuit thickness (about a centimetre). Cut with biscuit cutter of your choice of size, place on tin foil lined tray and bake 160 degrees in fan assisted oven (180 in non fan oven). Cook for 10 minutes.

Have you tried cutting acidic food out your diet? I can't take any of that family of drugs as it makes other issues worse and I found that cutting citrus and other acidic foods out makes a huge difference. I rarely have any gastritis pain now and when I do I usually find I've accidentally had something acidic. There loads of advice online about what to avoid.

Do you drink coffee? That can cause issues. Especially fresh ground coffee. I had similar problems and my GP advised me to keep off it completely for a couple of weeks and it did ease up although I was on esomeprazole as well. Silicol gel is supposed to help and its a fairly neutral product with no side effects. Might be worth a shot.

Hope your symptoms are easing....'re Lanzoprasol....I was on it for years, having been prescribed it after a rectal haemorrhage after taking Aspirin....continued for some time....then read about Lanzoprasol stops the absorption of Vitamin B12.....so I stopped it....have to admit I do take one very occasionally when I get reflux...probably not an ideal use of the drug...I also take B12 tablets daily.

The medication for acid reflux is not really meant to be used long term but it happens.
