Colonoscopy

Hi, I've just had a painful colonoscopy done. I've had four biopsy samples taken. They have put on the report that I have a few ti aphthous ulcerations. I've googled them but have decided just to wait until the results come back. In the meantime did anyone here have these ulceratios found and if yes what was the follow up? Thanks

Hi, well where I do start? I had a couple of episodes of diarrhoea in the late 1990's and going in to the 2000's. I stayed off dairy and it didn't help. It wasn't until 2007 that I started to experience vomiting every morning, diarrhoea, feeling bloated and getting full up just after eating just a bit of a meal (My GP verbally diagnosed me with IBS). I also put it down to just working with children and that it was my immune system getting use to the environment. It wasn't until 2009 (yes it went on for 2 years!!!) that I had an endoscopy showing that I had Gastritis. I got married in 2012 and my symptoms still persisted but I got use to it. My new symptoms were bleeding from my bottom and lower back pain (again I put it down to bending and lifting due to my job). I ended up getting pregnant unfortunately it was an ectopic pregnancy. My tube had ruptured and I needed a blood transfusion. I was told I nearly died!

Roll on a couple of days I got a DVT in my leg and multiple PEs in my lung from the surgery. I was on warfarin for a year. It was during this time that my symptoms went super crazy for three years! I would get abdominal and back pain, generally feel unwell, I had diarrhoea most of the time and my symptoms would intensify during the time of the month. I couldn't eat a full meal and I would feel bloated.

During this time I had stool samples and my bloods always came back fine apart from my CRP level. It would always be on the borderline level. They diagnosed me with Endometriosis and wouldn't do a laparoscopy to confirm it because of my thrombosis history. I went on pre menopausal injections for 6 months which didn't help as I was still getting pain. My Gynaecologist discharged me because I was still getting pain I didn't have Endometriosis and asked my GP to refer me to Gastroenterology. He refused saying he wasn't going to refer me to Gastroenterology based on my IBS symptoms. A couple of weeks later I became very ill. I had intense abdominal and back pain and was vomiting non stop. I had a temperature and I was told I had an UTI (I had never had an UTI before!). I was given antibiotics and I felt better for a day. The next day I felt worse. I was vomiting brown bile up with blood.

My GP referred me to hospital after a ultrasound and CT scan. They found out I had a bowel obstruction caused by two incisional hernias. I was nil by mouth for three days, I had another laparotomy and a small bowel resection. I was lucky because I was told that I may have needed a stoma bag. I spent 9 days in hospital and then my incision scar had opened up. It took 16 weeks to heal.

I then became constipated (still am-I have changed my diet, walk alot more and drink more water). Five months later I had the same symptoms as my bowel obstruction and ended up in hospital again. I was told I have severe adhesions and that I had to be careful because adhesions caused obstructions too. I then had more episodes and was told to resort to a low residue diet.

After two emergency surgeries I told myself I didn't want to go through another episode so I wanted to minimise the risks. My GP finally referred me to Gastroenterology. I had another CT scan just to make sure there were no recurring hernias. To tell you the truth I had waited a while to be referred to Gastro and I was disappointed with them as they didn't want to investigate my symptoms.

They refused to do a colonoscopy because I suffer from sleep apnoea and didn't want to put me through it. It was during this time that I found out that my stool sample showed inflammation and that the tissue sample from my surgery showed chronic inflammation. The Gastro consultant said because of my past and current health conditions it was hard to pin point which condition produced which symptom as they all produced very similar symptoms.

My GP then referred me to a colorectal surgeon. I found the consultant to be fantastic because he listened. He noted all my symptoms and said that I was going to have two scans. I had an ultrsound which diagnosed me with gallstones to my surprise which could have explained my upper abdominal pain. mid back pain and vomiting. The consultant also did a rectal examination and said that everything seemed fine. To my surprise he mentioned a colonoscopy which I wasn't expecting because my stool and bloods in the past had showed no inflammatory markers apart from the recent ones. I've finally had a colonoscopy and I'm glad so after 13 years maybe I will some answers. I am now waiting for the biopsy results
