Leaking feces

Hi I'm a 62 yr old female and I have an extremely swollen stomach, backache, tummy ache and I'm leaking feces at least 5 out of the 7 days. I go to the loo regularly so I can't understand it. I'm so embarrassed and frightened to go out. Can any one help me. Thank you.

Hi, I think you might have constipation and what sometimes happens is that you get this kind of leakage. I think it is called overflow diarrhoea. There is a good description of this on WebMD the article is called What is IBS-M? but I seem to be unable to put a link on here for you. Maureen.

Have you been tested for other things? I was told for years I had IBS-D but after being really ill, being sick and bad diarrhoea I was sent for further tests and turns out I have bile acid malabsorption (bam for short). I now take a binder med. There are so many misdiagnosed bowel/stomach problems.

Hi, I have seen a lot lately about BAM and wonder if I have that. I get desperate diarrhoea and have had many accidents, going through a bad patch now. My question is whether you had constant diarrhoea or whether you had periods of being ok before it returned again. Many thanks

I can be ok for a week and then have an attack. In fact the week I had the test for bam I didn’t have diarrhoea once and it still came back positive luckily.

Thank you! I shall certainly talk to my gp about it. It is really affecting my life at the moment.

Yes I bet. I got fobbed off for years being told it was IBS or it must be something I’m eating - anything fatty went through me so I avoided that. I tried gluten free even though I was tested for coeliac and that was ok. It got worse and worse over the years to the point where the pain and the fact I was on the toilet in the middle of the night for hours on end and sometimes being sick, and working full time, I got to the point of enough was enough. Saw a different doctor in the practice who referred me straight away and as soon as I told the consultant she said it’s probably bam. Had a test and it was. The test is non invasive. You have a tablet with small amount of radiation in and wait a couple of hours then a 10 min scan just on your middle part. Then another scan a week later. This checks your retention rate. As said, I didn’t even have a problem that week (no diarrhoea) and it came back positive.

Ps she said it was the most misdiagnosed thing!

This sounds similar to what I may have no matter what I eat what I do I seem to have loose stools I would say 90% of the time , I cannot take Loperamide as I have a heart condition and that could affect it so have to take a Codeine tablet or two most days to leave the house , go to work etc and avoid having a very close near miss , I have recently had a colonoscopy and the consultant has just said said it's IBS feel like I'm at my wit's end some days but will ask my dr if they can test for this .

Yes definitely ask. It’s called a SeCHAT scan and the only way to formally diagnose. Alternatively ask for a binder medication like Questran and if that works then pretty sure you have it. I still get cramps and bloating (side effects unfortunately) but it does stop me having to run to the toilet or having any accidents!

I too have this problem. Wear an incontinence pad 24/7. Try the simethicone for bloating. Also small portions of food and no artificial Sweetners. Limit your sugar intake. Hope this helps
