I've had internal piles before and ended up having them banded via surgery as they bled lots and wouldn't clear up with meds. Been to GPs today and now got external ones... have been given Uniroid-HC ointment to apply (it can be inserted too via an extension nozzle applicator) and got Ibuprofen to take... Personally I've never got on with suppositories. Good luck with yours, Charlotte

Sorry meant to say if you don't want to go to docs you should be able to get a cream or ointment from pharmacy, but I would strongly suggest a trip to GP...

Hi Sarah, I've had a long-term problem with piles, dating back to when my first child was born nearly 23 years ago. I suffered a lot for a 10 year period before finally agreeing to my GP referring me to hospital. Best thing I ever done. I got them banded and almost instantly I had no pain. Amazing! That was in 2007. So 10 years on I still get the odd flare up but the pain, discomfort and bleeding is nothing compared to what it was. Please go and see your doctor and discuss treatment options, it really could make all the difference x

If they are external try using vicks vapor rub 2-3 times per day (yes really).

I've suffered for years - the Dr prescribed me Anusol + HC which was the best for me - it's stronger than the over the counter normal cream. You can get it via Lloyds Pharmacy online or via pharmacist approval if you want to avoid the doctor.

Hi sarablonde, I have been getting them since I was 18 (now 35) and although it's horrendously embarrassing mine are excruciatingly painful..so I think it's definitely worth going to the docs but resting will help to heal too. The prescribed ointments are much stronger than over the counter meds.

Over time I have found that suppositories sometimes work well at catching the internal ones early before they become external (although if they are bad ones - this won't stop them!).

I've had banding, the experience was a shock as I thought I was just gonna have a consultation but they did it there and then! it stopped them for a few years but they're now back with vengeance.

I would recommend a sitz bath to soak the area with warm water (relieves the pain without having to get in the bath every few hours!) and gel cool packs that you can place near the area discretely. I've tried all the herbal remedies but nothing does the job really..Just ordered some witch hazel pads on Amazon.. il honestly try anything to relieve the pain! Painkillers will also help to relieve the pain but won't stop them growing. X

Why do you get them?

Various reasons, stress, IBS flare ups, I have a number of food intolerances and they are also hereditary..so sometimes there's no reason.. they just happen.
