Hi everyone,I went to the doctor today to ask about a prescribed IBS treatment as buscopan hasn't been affective and she has given me Mebeverine to try. I wanted to ask if anyone has been taking it and has it helped?
Thanks.

I used to take it and it did help, now I only take it on the very odd occasion that I need to. If you find out what triggers your ibs you will be able to control it better. Do a food diary and then see what the foods that you eat make you feel like. If you eat something that kicks off your ibs then rule it out of your diet.
Hi Crystal,I was exact same had Buscopan then Meverbine and none helped me.I'm now on Alverine, that's been the best
Hi crystal
My mum has IBS and took Mebeverine for years very successfully . No side effects and it did help her. She's switched to buscopan as it stopped helping , our bodies get used to these things!. Only take it when needed . Good luck with it. X
Yes Mebeverine has been good for me,Have taken it on and off for many years. Not all the time but when IBS flares up.As soon as I get the slightest symptom,I take it until everything calms down again. Its brilliant!
I took it for a few years and it did nothing, also took Alverine (spasmonal) and that also did nothing.
Hi Robbie,
What's the cause to your IBS?
Cause, you mean what are the triggers?
Yeah,the triggers.
Have tried to find food triggers but could not. At the moment I have been referred to a Professor in Manchester after about 40 years of being ignored. I got a new doctor who was more sympathetic. My triggers seem mostly to be leaving the house and not knowing where the toilets are. I now have a radar key and card of the hospital. I could be fine one minute and my husband will say shall we just go ? and it will immediately start. Mine is predominantly diarhhoea. If I have to go somewhere I will take immodium but that will not work quick enough and then I will suffer the other way for days.
I'm really sorry to hear you are struggling like this!!
I'm assuming it's been touched upon that anxiety could be the trigger? When you know you are going out,you can plan and figure out where there will be toilets, which is your safety net for the 'just in case' but when you have to go out and you haven't been allowed to plan ahead, this sets off anxiety which results in you needing to go. My doctor said that when I become anxious,a hormone is released which causes my bowel to spasm which results in me needing to find a bathroom quickly.
I've no idea how complex your issue is but could that be a possibility with you also in terms of what triggers it?
I tried Imodium once. It made me very dizzy. Turned out the ingredient lowers my blood pressure. So today was my first day of taking Meb and I got it in to my head that I was allergic and I became anxious. I had to calm myself down and remember I had been fine on buscopan, this is no different.
Another thought, have you tried/heard about/considered CBT (cognital behaviour therapy)? My GP gas referred me again as I tried it a few years back when I first became an IBS sufferer and it really helped.
I hope you have had a lovely evening.
Thanks, it does seem to be anxiety. I have had this for about 40 years but it is getting worse as I get older. Sometimes it will happen now and again at home for no reason also just going shopping which is only 10 minutes away and I know all the toilets plus all the shop who will help.
