Try looking up FODMAP's or FODMAP diet. If you do a google search there is a lot of info. Different sites vary what included but I found it a useful place to start.
Best info for FODMAPs on the web is at Monash University in Oz where the diet was first developed. Good iPhone app on there plus a book with full details. NHS dietitians are also handing out their own info on this diet now.
I have IBS-C and PD . i asked my GI doc yesterday about when an attack is caused by something I ate. I showed her my fodmaps printout. She said, "You read my mind!" I was going to mention FODMAPS!" i got a referral to 2 nutritionists. Whoopee.
I paid £150 for a consultation with a medical nutritionist and it was the best money I ever spent! That was 9 years ago and I have avoided wheat ever since. However, when I am stressedI still suffer with IBS symptoms so now I am on colofac, which are amazing.
I've also turned into an exercise addict. Swimming before work has helped loads and I've hardly suffered with IBS in the last year. My top tip would be loads of exercise, it helps loads.
Thankyou everyone for your advice I am disabled and stuck in a wheelchair so can't do much exercise so I guess that's out. Just had a bout of diareha and I haven't even eaten don't know what else to do
Hi Jen,
I'm sure we can all empathise. Mine is mainly C with occasional D flare-ups. Things that might work for one person might not work for another and things that sometimes help often stop helping - my doctor doesn't understand mine - he gave advice as if I had diarrhea every day, which was to try taking Loperamide every day to slow my system down which wouldn't work for me - maybe worth a try.
Also, have you tried taking psyllium? - it can help diarrhea as well as constipation.
Another thing to try, which is something I only started on a week ago, is a good brand of Aloe juice - I am using Pukka which is expensive, but the purest on the market.
We seem to have something that isn't even understood by doctors.
Another thing the doctor tried (which didn't work for me) was a low dose of SRRIs - something to do with the 'brain-gut connection'
A long shot is a drug called Lotronex, which for some unknown (to me anyway) can only be taken by women - there is some info on this link but maybe you could look into it Lotronex lotronex.com/
It might be worth speaking to your GP about it. I used to assume they knew all the drugs available, but I found an antispasmodic online last year. My doctor had never heard of it and said it was probably the same as others - he looked in his book and said it wasn't the same drug and prescribed them (didn't help though )
Good luck.
