the only thing that really seems to work on constipation these days is movicol...anyone here found that fodmap works for constipation? Been gluten-free for five years but after reading through these pages, fructans could be my real problem - for example I know garlic makes me feel rather sick a few hours later...second question, how long does it take to get a referall to a fodmap dietician? any advice related to these issues very welcome

the best thing i have found for constipation is magnesium citrate tablets available from health stores or online they have also helped a friend of mine who had suffered constipation all her life. x

Hi,

As I'm a D-type, can't answer your question about how well fodmaps work for C-types, but it's a very successful diet for me. I had to wait about 3 weeks to see a dietitian, but I think it depends on which area you're in and what resources are like. However, I wanted to say that I started on fodmaps 6 - 7 months ago - before it was adopted by the NHS - and got my info from the Monash Uni website where it was developed. Bit tricksy as you have to find your way around Australian foods, but it's not that difficult. There's a good iPhone app to download from the site as well which is great to take shopping or when you're eating out. I also found Patsy Catsos's book, 'IBS - Free At Last', to be extremely helpful. American food this time, but still very informative.

As for your comment on fructans, it took me a long time to work out that gluten itself is not a problem for me and it was fructans causing my problems instead. I too feel really sick after eating anything in that group. As gluten-free products are aimed at people with coeliacs disease, they contain all sorts of ingredients not suitable for fodmappers.

Hope this helps.

I asked to be referred to a FODMAP dietician in February and got the appointment in April.

However I researched it myself online and started it straight away so by the time I had my appointment ( which consisted of being handed over booklets and not much else compared to what I found online) I had been on the diet for two months.

I found the diet makes me constipated. But I take flaxseeds (ground) everyday and my bowels are regular:-)
