Low Fodmap Diet & Constipation

Hello,

I started the Low Fodmap diet a few days ago under the Supervision of a Dietitian. I have had the most awful bout of Constipation, the worst I have ever experienced and quite honestly, frightened the living day lights out of me. My question is, as anyone else experienced this reaction to the fodmap diet? If so, how did you deal with it.

Thank you for any info, or help you can give me.

Ah yes the fodmap constipation! I hope you're feeling a little better? There is a hack to it, kiwi fruit :) one with breakfast and one late afternoon/eve, takes a couple of days but keeps everything moving and regular x

2 kiwis are low fodmap, so its fine to have every day - just good to space them apart and one at a time.

Thank you very much asbayford for the Kiwis tip. I have gone out and bought myself a netted bag of them. I really hope they help, it is such a terrible problem to have.

Yes this happened to me. I stuck to diet under dietician but Ibs worse. Biofeedback nurse prescribed irrigation and constella. No ibs now and probably never was but I can't fully evacuate my bowels. My muscles don't work anymore. I'm waiting to go to continence clinic. I never had this problem before the diet.

Hello Auntyjean,

So sorry you have found yourself in this awful position. When you get referred to a Fodmap Dietitian you pin all hopes on them being able to help and make a difference, not be worse off for it. I have another 5 weeks to go on the first stage, If I feel worse (c) for being on it, I will take myself off the diet and carry on trying to cope with it myself. I hope you get sorted before too long. Thank you for your reply.

You can add fibre to your diet in low fodmap amounts. For instance ground flaxseed, other seeds and oat bran. If you download the Monash university fodmap app: monashfodmap.com/ibs-centra...

you can look up fibrous foods and see what quantities you can have them in.

Thank you xjrs.

I do have the app on my phone which is a big help. I think it is a case of getting used to it as well. The Dietitian did say on my first meeting that a lot of what I eat is classed as high fodmap so, I have a lot of changes to make. Just need to get used to it I think. It has encouraged me to cook a lot more from scratch which is a bonus. Thank you for your help.
