Three months on
Its now just over three months since my husband was in ICU for just over three weeks, a week of this on an incubator, and a further two weeks with a tracheotomy. A number of things went wrong or were not done very well, and although he at one stage he appeared to be recovering he died on a high dependency

Turning lemons into lemonade
As the 3 year anniversary of my admission to ICU comes round (18th December) I reflect on how it has changed my life, one minute I was looking forward to Christmas the next I was fighting for my life, rushed to hospital by ambulance with suspected swine flu, taken from A&E straight to ICU, so critically

Hi im new and thank you sooo much
After a week I had an emergency
tracheostomy
. All I can say about this time is that it was pure hell!! I had petrifying nightmares, I was hallucinating that the nurses and doctors were trying to kill me and it still haunts me to this day!

10 days ago my 31 year old nephew had a quad biking accident whilst on holiday in Cyprus.
He has been in intensive care ever since the accident, has had a stent fitted and has had a tracheotomy. He is now breathing for himself and opens his eyes but is not focusing nor is he really responding to his fiancee or mum when they speak to him. We love him so much and it is so very hard to

Does any one else have problems with concentration memory and overall loss of cognitive ability and if so how do you cope?

tracheostomy
& ventilated following small bowel surgery that went badly wrong (they made 2 holes in the bowel wall & failed to diagnose it for 6 days by which time I had peritonitis septiceamia & ARDS) A prolonged case for compensation

An Inspirational Story...
I met a lovely lady today who was diagnosed with Vasculitis (WG GPA) 40 years ago this year. She has had 2 children since she was diagnosed, she is going for a nose reconstruction operation next year, she had a tracheotomy in 1994, she started treatment for her Vasculitis before Cylophos, Mycophenolate

Thank you for the great support you give also outside!
First of all congratulation for the blog, I'm from Spain (sorry for my poor English) and my mother has spent 5 weeks in the ICU (from 4th of February to 9th of March) here in my country, she went through the second surgeon (the second within 3 months!) of replacement of her heart mitral valve and

The nightmare that will never end.
It's now just over two years from when I was in ICU, so critically ill it was thought I wouldn't survive, the first seven and a half weeks of my three month stay in ICU I have no memory of, only the strange dreams and nightmares fill this time but one of these nightmares I cannot forget as in some strange

Did anyone who had a Tracheostomy or was Intubated think they were talking to a nurse, when because of the tube they could not have been?
I didn't until recently remember anything at all about my stay in ICU, but I now little things are coming back to me. For instance when I was intubated and put in a medical coma I remember calling nurses and being totally ignored (not surprising I thought as they were the ones who were trying to kill

How did I survive such a critical illness.
I was taken to hospital by ambulance with a severe chest infection, blood oxygen level of 78% on arrival taken to ICU and that's the last thing I remember for 53 days locked in my own world of strange dreams and nightmares, during this time I was intubated for 19 days then had a tracheotomy (for another

BBC 2 Winter Virus Programme tonight features Mr Guri Sandhu ENT in London
Mr Sandhu is a WG expert and is responsible for many successful operations including my own where I was able to have my
tracheostomy
removed thanks to his skills. His actual speciality is the trachea and he was involved in writing a paper on WG which won a European Award.

We can all make a difference
Just over 2 years ago I was admitted to ICU so critically ill it was thought I would not survive but after 3 months and some amazing work done by ICU staff, I was discharged to a ward for a further 2 weeks finally going home on the 30th March 2011. I vowed that I would never forget these wonderful

The 18th December 2010 will be etched in my memory forever, it was the day that turn my world and my families upside down, during that day my (what I thought was a chest infection) got worse, by early evening my wife became very concerned as my breathing had become very rapid and my lips were turning

Spatial disorientation
I was in an ICU for 3 weeks in December 2010 following a Boerhaave spontaneous rupture of the oesophagus. My lungs packed up so was on a ventilator; nil by mouth and liquid/tube fed; also had tracheotomy. I have only recently discovered this website having read about it in the Sunday Times. It has been

My ICU story and after.....
My first memories of being awake on ICU are of being handled for procedures and how horrible that was, and of a lot of things that turned out later to be imaginary: of trying telling the staff I had soiled myself (when in fact I had a stoma), of thinking I was talking to people when in fact I had a
