UPDATE : 22 July 2024 - My husband spent a total of 8 weeks in ICU incubated and sedated. Tracheostomy has been removed, but he's really not well and has moved to a Stroke & Neuro Rehab Ward. His surgery apparently went well but he still can't move his arms and keeps getting infections. A long road to recovery still ongoing. Thank you all for your kind words.
My husband went into St George's Tooting for a Quadruple (or Quintuple) Heart Bypass on Fri 12 April 2024. He is not home yet and still in ICU (although moved nearer home now). Apparently the heart surgery itself went well, but his recovery didn't. SO anyway, he's still alive but has spent nearly 5 weeks on sedation and ventilation. He's had a surgical tracheostomy now and off sedation but has such muscle wastage around his body, he can't move his arms/legs etc and has subluxation of the shoulders, which isn't helping. I just thought I'd give you an update.

So sorry to hear you are both struggling. Wishing you both well on his return to good health. Slow process but trust he will get there. Take care of yourself too, its a long haul, pace yourself along the way. All the very best to you both.
Bless You both. So very sorry to hear this. O.H.S is tough enough - on everyone, without all these added complications. I can’t imagine what he must be feeling and the emotional toll that it’s taken on the whole family. Such a worry.
I really hope that his ongoing recovery turns a corner soon and starts to improve. I’ll be a year post op in June and am continuing to have various issues, but they pale into insignificance when I read all that you’ve both been through. My heart goes out to you - because there but for the grace of God, it could be any of us here, who’ve had surgery.
Stay strong and know that all the other ‘Hearties’ here, are willing your Hubby better and home soon. ❤️🩹
I’m so sorry to hear recovery has been more difficult than you anticipated for your husband. We have another member on here in a similar position to you so please feel free to post on here if you would like for advice or support for him, and for yourself.
Oh dear, I feel your pain. My hubby had his quadruple on 1st Feb, didn't come round fully for 16 days until he had a tracheostomy. After 7weeks in cardiac ICU he was moved to a local hospital. They discovered he'd had a slight stroke, mostly recovered from that. He was in HDU in local hospital for 3 weeks and is now in a private room on a ward. Has a private room because of his tracheostomy. He's had 2 smaller tubes in it but still cuffed. Hopefully he'll be able to get an uncuffed one soon. He's had a RIG fitted straight into his tummy and now syringes his own feeds and water in. He can't eat or drink as it was all going down the wrong way, he has spoken a couple of times when the cuff is down. If he can tolerate an uncuffed one he may be able to have a speaker valve. We are hoping eventually he'll be able to eat and drink again and even get the tracheostomy out, but may take a year. He's trained to do his own feeds and soon they're going to train us both with tracheostomy, suction etc. Hoping he can then get home in 6-10 weeks and we'll manage and then have outpatient appointments. So will be around 6 months by the time he gets home. He is bright, still got his sense of humour, walking well now, including stairs, can shower and dress himself again. It's been a long hard time, but it does get better. Look after yourself as it's very tiring. Feel free to message me if you want to Sue x
Oh I'm so sorry to hear about your Husband, I can't imagine the stress & worry that this has caused you. He is in the best place & hopefully will be back on his feet asap with the teams supporting him. Sending love & best wishes to you both xx
At least he is in the best place. But I would have thought the physios would be exercising his limbs even in bed to lesson the muscle wastage. I know people who have bedridden after operations conscience and awake who had this done . As it aids recovery once they start to be mobile. I hope he is being moved into different positions to prevent bed sores. Sorry to add to your worries. But these are things that popped into my mind. I did it for my mom when she lived with me her last 18 months of her life she had cancer and dementia. Proud to say my mom didn't have a sore on her body.
Hi Mydog8it. Have a search on here for gardenview, formally known as castleview. Her husband is going through the exact same thing. Her husband Ralph, is getting slowly better. You might be able to swap info and be of mutual help and advice.
oh my that’s terrible so sorry to hear for you both that he’s not recovering as expected. 6 weeks ago I had Quad bypass and generally been ok until Friday where pain and fluid around the heart have brought me back into hospital. I wish you both all the best to a full recovery.
Hi so sorry to hear this I wish your husband well and hope he will be home with you very soon. Good to see Gardenview has responded to your post as her husband Ralph is going through the same thing and I’m sure she will offer support and advise. Good luck 🍀🍀sending ❤️🤗🙏 please keep us updated. Take care X.
Sorry to hear your husbands recovery has not gone to plan. I can't offer any advice but just wanted to wish you both well and remember to get some rest yourself too. Hope he makes good progress over time. Thinking of you both.
