Bitter taste receptors regulate thyroid function
Ca2+ responses were unaffected by 6-n-
propylthiouracil
, consistent with the expression of an unresponsive variant of its cognate receptor, TAS2R38, in these cells. TAS2R agonists also inhibited basal and TSH-dependent iodide efflux.

I appear to be allergic to all medications but am getting worse whilst awaiting specialist....any thoughts or guidance please
Doc prescribed Carbimadole (but allergic to) and now
Propylthiouracil
says no other options until specialist seen me as all symptoms show underactive thyroid but reading is high so they are stumped

Hi I am 48 years old and was first diagnosed with graves back in 2001 and this is my fourth relapse. Unfortunately I can no longer tolerate
Carbimazole and have recently Been put onto
propylthiouracil
tablets ( carbimazole alternative ). Radioactive iodine or a full thyroidectomy have been advised but I don't fancy either!! Has anyone had the iodine treatment?

My new bloods read TSH 1.6, T3 4.1 (3.5 to 6.5) and T4 16.6 (10-20) I have been suffering with usual overactive symptoms.
I'm on block and replace 300mg
propylthiouracil
and 75mg thyroxin at present.

How long can you stay on propylthiouracil? I have been on it for about six years as I'm utterly terrified at the idea of RAI etc

MHRA Medicines Recalls
There is only one medicine specific to thyroid disorder -
Propylthiouracil
from Wockhardt - though several of the medicines will undoubtedly be on the prescriptions of some here.

Does anyone take propylthiouracil?
When I first started to be unwell because of Grave's disease I was prescribed Carbimazol, but I had a bad reaction with itchy skin therefore was prescribed
propylthiouracil
for 8years which caused me a liver damage! I'd like to know if anyone is on this? Thanks. xx

Propylthiouracil and liver disease!
So if you are taking the
propylthiouracil
I would advise you to ask your consultant/GP to check from time to time your liver function!!

New-onset atrial fibrillation is a predictor of subsequent hyperthyroidism
Development of hyperthyroidism was assessed as initiation of methimazole or
propylthiouracil
up to a 13-year period. Risk of hyperthyroidism was analysed by Poisson regression models adjusted for important confounders such as amiodarone treatment.

Just over 3 weeks since I'm on
Propylthiouracil
. I have just come out of a brain fog that has lasted years. I was so used to being tired, confused, unable to concentrate and stressed out that i forgot what it was like to have my mind.

Antiphospholipid Antibodies
It should be noted that in animal models, both methimazole and
propylthiouracil
were found to attenuate levels of autoantibodies and manifestations of experimental SLE.[10] Whether changes of aCL antibody levels with disease activity was related to thyroid activity per se, to the known immunosuppressive
