Propylthiouracil

I was diagnosed with overactive thyroid over 20 years ago and was prescribed propylthiouracil to manage my symptoms and levels. I have my bloods taken every year and there has never been any reason for concern.

The doctors have prescribed me propylthiouracil to start and take until I'm 12 weeks pregnant before changing my medication. Has anyone taken this whilst pregnant before? I am so torn as to what to do for the best as the potential side effects for this drug seem very scary.

Other than opening eyes to what symptoms can occur, it raises questions about the management of changes between Carbimazole and Propylthiouracil (PTU).

I was on propylthiouracil 450mg a day until 3 weeks ago when my endocrinologist lowered the dose to 150mg a day. Since then, I have experienced a terrible salty taste in my mouth that doesn't go away. I feel like my saliva is thicker and something like dry mouth.

I have advised to now stop Propylthiouracil as my thyroid levels were normal. I stopped this 3-weeks ago and wonder how long it would take to leave the system?

can’t get my pills after 40 yrs propylthiouracil brand Wockhardt + rph dr gave me a prescription but pharmacies stopped having them I have talked to company who supply hospital etc but I can’t even buy them I know they’re expensive but I need find them Hoping someone in uk are having these It was suggested

Hello all, I finally had a follow up appointment with the consultant today and he prescribed Propylthiouracil 100 mg. He said the side effects could be severe sore throat, sudden mouth ulcer or very high temperature and if that happens, he advised to stop the medicine immediately.

I have been taking propylthiouracil for 40 yrs only took brand Wockhardt and RPH as generic made me ill apparently the drug was ok but mixers upset me I have hyperthyroid and goitre and turned down the radioactive iodine 40 yrs ago consultant was cross and told me I’d shorted life However I’m now 84

I was then put in propylthiouracil 100mg daily then I had RAI in march this year.

I’ve now been on Propylthiouracil 50mg for about 7 weeks and feel ok on them. Had my blood result yesterday and my TSH is ‘just in’ normal range again and T4 and T3 moved down a bit so all looking good so far. Wondering how long I can stay on this medication for?

I do not know if I can cope another 6 months on anti thyroid medication, and that is if its not 18 months of just propylthiouracil. TIA Charlotte 🙂

The British Thyroid Foundation has produced, and is recommending, an alert card for those taking anti-thyroid medicines (Carbimazole or Propylthiouracil). https://www.btf-thyroid.org/antithyroid-drugs-alert-card I fully endorse the need for such a card.

I am currently on 50mg of propylthiouracil a day (started this dose on the 26th of September) I am just a bit confused with the results and how I'm feeling, I get chest pains which are very hard to explain, doctors say it's anxiety.

I was prescribed 100mg of Propylthiouracil. This was reduced to 50mg a day at my next check in (I can't remember when this was but not too long after diagnosis).

Take anti thyroid medication of propylthiouracil to see if this gets my levels back within range. I have several concerns: - Will starting medication mean I am going to be on meds for the rest of my life? - I’ve heard it can make you hypo then it’s more meds to rectify this?

Can propranolol be taken with propylthiouracil? Thanks

They have put me on propylthiouracil. I have been on these for 3 months and I am not feeling any different. I feel worse. My chest hurts from beating and that's with propranolol 4x a day.

100mg propylthiouracil.

When I was controlled by propylthiouracil my TSH was kept around 0.8 and T4 around 20.

I’ve been taking propylthiouracil 200mg daily since November. I feel absolutely fine now. What should I be asking the endocrinologist?
