It is not unusual but more often these days Carbimazole is used.
The British National Formulary says this:
Propylthiouracil is given in a dose of 200 to 400 mg daily in divided doses in adults and this dose is maintained until the patient becomes euthyroid; the dose may then be gradually reduced to a maintenance dose of 50 to 150 mg daily in divided doses.
AND
PROPYLTHIOURACIL
Indications
hyperthyroidism
Cautions
monitor for hepatotoxicity
Hepatotoxicity
Severe hepatic reactions have been reported, including fatal cases and cases requiring liver transplant—discontinue if significant liver-enzyme abnormalities develop
Counselling
Patients should be told how to recognise signs of liver disorder and advised to seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine, or pruritus develop
Hepatic impairment
reduce dose (see also Hepatotoxicity above)
Renal impairment
use three-quarters normal dose if eGFR 10–50 mL/minute/1.73 m2; use half normal dose if eGFR less than 10 mL/minute/1.73 m2
Pregnancy
neonatal goitre and hypothyroidism; see also notes above
Breast-feeding
monitor infant's thyroid status but amount in milk probably too small to affect infant; high doses may affect neonatal thyroid function; see also notes above
Side-effects
see under Carbimazole; leucopenia; rarely cutaneous vasculitis, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anaemia, hypoprothrombinaemia, hepatic disorders (including hepatitis, hepatic failure, encephalopathy, hepatic necrosis; see also Hepatotoxicity above), nephritis, lupus erythematous-like syndromes
Dose
See notes above

Hi
I had it the first time I went hyper and started on 300 3 x a day and then reduced down, I felt great on it bloods went back to normal quickly and had no affects, the Endo I am with now said it had to be Carrbimazole, my bloods are still not normal 18 months later although since she refuses to tell me my blood test results even though she was asked 3 times I don't really know what it is.
Don't know if this helps you at all
Rod has posted a very comprehensive response.
From my own experience (I had a serious negative reaction to proply) that you ask to have frequent blood tests to monitor your liver cuntion.
Not sure why you have been given this anti-thyroid rather than Carbi?
Take care.

i take 1 50mg tab of ppt daily and have been for past year diagnosed hyper in feb 2012
originally put on carbimazol but this reduced my white cell count and was taken off and put on ppt
ppt did cause a rise in my alkalysing phosphate levels so had a liver scan and more bloods
liver scan fine levels reduced once meds reduced endo was nt at all concerned and said thats what happens with overactive thryoid?
have been fine due to see endo again next week

I was put on PPT when I was in my 20's because told the doctor I felt a lump in my throat. He felt it and thought my thyroid was enlarged so I took that medication for a year or so and then became pregnant at which time I was taken off of ppt. It was many, many years later that I became hypothyroid. I would suggest you try to keep track of any deficiencies, stay away from junk food and attempt to keep your life as stress free as you can. Meditation and Yoga might help neutralize the stresses we all face.
Thank you for all the information from you all , really helpful
