CHANGING Room CHAT...WEEK 3.... Taking time out...to...

Hello, people... !

Welcome to the changing room on this very cold and snowy day here in the Staffs Moorlands.

I am a tad late today,,, whizzing around and here and there... and ready for a sit down!

Take a seat and a warm or cold drink, and relax.

A bit of an odd subject today and one I did not really expect to be thinking about in depth again, but... here I am !

I have had , as many folk are aware, a bit of a lay off from exercise , and have been building back very slowly until I felt strong enough to continue my regular chosen exercise. This is where the amazing choice of support exercise, here on the forum has paid dividends.

Now, because I am here, there and everywhere on the forums, it has been fairly noticeable that many of our forum friends are suffering a tad. Not from injury sustained through an exercise problem , but from the nasty viruses and illnesses that are currently taking hold. Influenza, Norovirus and our old, (and new), constant companion, Covid.

The advice, which we have put out on all our forums during the pandemic, still stand, but, much of the advice is relevant to much of what ails us...So, however seemingly depressing this post may seem... and it is not intended as such... it is perhaps something that we may find helpful.

I do know that when I began my comeback, in the months at the end of 2023, I did rely on previous advice and lessons learned.

Now...Where do we go from here?

Any illness of any severity, impacts us; all of us. We do have an amazing machine in the form of our body... but it can be impaired or faulty or damaged, We need to be aware and to look after it! Maintain it and manage it.

Any of these illnesses mentioned plus others, can affects people in different ways.

The way that the illnesses affect us and how to recover are constantly changing, ( especially with the latest Covid variants).

Because we are so wonderfully different, our recovery and come back times will be different.

Okay... let's start with what we all know is essential for all of us, whatever sport we indulge in.

Rest

When we are recovering from illness or injury, it's important to get more rest than usual.

This is because your body needs time to heal, but, remembering too, that resting for too long can sometimes, cause problems.

The less you use your muscles, the weaker they become. Lethargy and more tiredness may result. It is cyclic.

The next step therefore is..

Finding a balance.

Start at a pace that feels comfortable or easy for you.

Be consistent and do small amounts of activity regularly.

Building back up.

After beginning...think about adding a little more.. .slow and steady. .

Don't be over ambitious, doing too much could tire you and set you back.

Try to manage what you do.

Do what feels right...you may feel like doing more, but try to be realistic.

Be patient, accept what you are able to do and acknowledge there are things that will have to wait.

Maybe plan the exercises or activities you would like to do, then think which you would like to try first.

Be prepared to tweak the plan if need be:)

So there it is... short and sweet?

The danger is for many of us, doing too much too soon... an extra kilometer or two on that walk... another kilometer done on a run taken too soon after illness. Working out for a longer time than is wise... and pushing too hard, too fast, in order to get back to normal.

We do have to try, hard, as it may be, to give ourselves time. The sports and activities whatever they are, will wait... they will still be there., when we and our body are good and ready.

So... is anyone going to 'fess up, to doing too much too soon?

I am probably a tad over cautious and I do maybe take it slower and steadier than is sometime necessary, but that is right for me... what about other folk? Is anyone coming back from illness, and has some tips or advice for us to share?

Looking forward to seeing you hearing your news...

🍏Popping in Floss with some flowers for you💐 as I sit a wee while until my watch buzzes and tells me to move 🤣 It’s actually better than my conscience at getting me off the sofa! Such wonderful advice for us as usual. Christmas 2022 was dubbed Covid Christmas in our family.. as one by one we all succumbed in spite of being vaccinated. I thought I was reasonably over it a week after negative tests & decided to get some fresh air & a short run. To my horror 5min into the run I was gasping for breath!! That set me back a long time & I had to be content with walking. I then started Couch from scratch. …. Well enough of me.. the watch is beeping & I need to prepare for tomorrow. Lovely to chat Oldfloss

Thanks you for popping in and the flowers.. a sign of better, warmer days to come...- 5 here this morning... and very icy and sparkly as far as I can tell in the darkness!

Oh a watch that prompts you... ! I do know many folk who have that... not sure that I would like it... but it works for you, which is great.

Yes...just after Christmas 2022 was when we succumbed... and your point that the virus left overs were still there when you went out? So useful

Man,. many folk,. because they do not feel particularly ill with Covid, forget that it really is a nasty thing! Our body does need time to adjust and recover, We were much worse with the aftermath after testing negative than the actual week of having it!

Building back is as you say, the key, and although we are all different, maybe allowing a bit of extra time would not be a bad thing.. I do worry when I read post where folk have headed out very quickly and then suffer because of it....

I hope you get a run in today, if weather permits! Stay warm xxx

Correction... Real feel -9!!!

Well as you may have spotted, I do have a tendency to drop off the radar from time to time.

I’ve been so far fortunate to not have any major illnesses (including Covid)…but life and stuff have interfered with getting out there and exercising.

So yes…I’m cautious too…so back to basics. C25k works, we know…so it’s my default to get back in the swing of things again, and I’ve just graduated for the 3rd time. Running (and walking) are for me a solitary activity…so it’s up to me how fast or slow I go, how far I go…or even if I go out at all.

However…I’ve joined in with 30 days of Yoga again, after not doing any regular YWA for well over a year. Now I love it, and I’m really enthusiastic about it…especially the poses that I can do. I’m also being firm with myself about “doing what feels good”, and skipping some of the flows.

BUT…I’m finding my dodgy knees are still protesting the next day, and I’m remembering from before that I had this problem. So yes…I confess…overdoing things with enthusiasm!

... well done you...

I feel that a fair few of us may have just got, over-enthusiastic! I do know that Bluebirdrunner has had in the past, a few knee twinges from enjoying her yoga too much:) I am sure she will not mind me sharing that...but like me, I feel that sometimes we are sometimes unaware of doing too much.

I can recall an achy back after a lower back session with Adriene! It was a while easing too!

You make some really interesting points ... just listening to your body and taking it as it comes and feels... so, so sensible, but sometimes hard to do?

You are finding the yoga useful that is clear... and finding that the joy has returned. I am enjoying the 30 days challenge with YWA very good too... and yes, you can tweak for bits that are tricky!

WE do have lives outside running and with the best will in the world, sometimes, finding even a short time to exercise seems impossible? That is why the exercise done without realising it, in our everyday tasks are so useful.

Thank you so much for this... I hope some others pop in and read it:)

Hi Floss, yes you are right, I was doing what I thought would be a gentle yoga with Adriene practice a month or so ago, when my knee was recovering from a ruptured Bakers cyst. The practice called for the runners stretch, and I went fully with it, then felt the twinge. It was a bit too much for my hammies and calfs. The stretches the physio had given me were just gentle ones against the wall for calfs, and seated for hamstrings. I understood why when I was in that low lunge!

The good news is, my leg is much better now and I too am doing the YWA 30 days January calender without issue now, and also just starting week 2 of C25k again. Listening to my knee and body, I will hold off on any 'extra' exercises just yet... having learned my lesson.

Good luck with your Tai chi classes, hope they are a fun activity for you and Mr OF to do together.

🎎xxx

Thank you... we are looking forward to doing the classes... and being together will be fun!

we so often don’t take our own advice to look after ourselves and plough on through, I’m guilty as charged!

Been back at it for a week and had three short runs although I feel I could push on I’m not going to, nobody is watching and I’m not under contract so if I don’t feel it I won’t do it .

Adrienne is marvellous the 30 days of yoga just re set us at the beginning of the year but no don’t force it go with the flow and as she says repeatedly find what feels good and if that just means listening to her voice and breathing so be it.

Enjoy your exercise forum friends but remember the advice you give to friends take it yourself too xx

Thanks for this.... we do find it hard don't we...? I, too, have been guilty of doing exactly what I advise folk not to!

Your plan sounds very good...and exactly right for you...let if flow... wise words indeed x

New Year started so well, 8 days into running Red January and then bang I succumbed to Covid. I thought I was doing do well managing to avoid the virus in the last 4 years and what's is worse I picked it up at the supermarket!Yesterday whilst it was cold, the sun was shining I was feeling back to normal so out I went for a short 3km run, planning an out and back so I could turn around at any point if my body complained too much. I am pleased to say I finished the run successfully and and now looking forward to getting back to 3 or 4 runs a week. It is so tempting to go out again today but know I should give my body time to recover properly so will restrict myself to a walk and some easy stretches, I do enjoy Yoga with Adrienne but my back complains for days after when I try her routines so need to find some equivalent routines which help with back complaints.

Well done you, taking it gently, listening to your body and taking notice...

I will have a look around to see if I can find any links and pass them on.. x Thank you for sharing this and I am really glad you are feeling better x

No excess to 'fess for me! But then I've had 40 years now to work this out... and MrGM has joined me in this tedious world which is both upsetting and companionable.

I say no excess. My excess has been not just being 'up past my bedtime' but out past my bedtime (put it like this, often when I am eating my evening meal, which can be as early as 5pm I am longing to be in bed... and I may have got out of it to cook or just to eat... when Winterwatch started this week, MrGM said "Are you sure you can do this, we can time shift it?" when I appeared again at 8pm)

But we've been out out! Two weeks running! Two evenings of laughter with Mark Watson and Rhod Gilbert. I will pay the price (I am paying the price this morning) and it will be worth it. And we're doing it again soon (not next week... that really would be too much)

Meanwhile I've been twiddling with the strength and flex activities - the yoga really is happening, by dint of not attempting even my short full practice - I've split it into standing and floor practices. And the Qi Gong online classes are easing me into online classes again (I hope... one tip for the convalescent is to be aware of how demanding a) standing and b) following instructions can be - it's not just 'don't try to run a marathon'!).

Thanks for this... it made me really smile... I find myself thinking of bed too... not as early as you though... sinking back on the pillow is my bliss moment. Out two evenings too!!! The high life or what...

You do make an interesting point too.. standing can be very tiring ... following instructions though? I am starting my T'ai Chi class on Tuesday... I think I may find the standing a tad trying! Mr OF is coming too...watch this space.

Enjoy your next outing!

I should emphasise that it wasn't two nights in a row...

Yes, definitely watch out with the T'ai Chi. I had to leave a class years ago because the teacher didn't get my sort of issues (spent a lot of time on another student with a different set of compromising issues) and wasn't happy with me sitting down when I needed to.

I've joined the group whilst poorly because this is my 3rd bout of poorly since September (coughs, colds, covid) and I can't help thinking I'm more susceptible thsn before because I've let my fitness levels drop over the last year. I'm back to doing short dog walks and need to take my time but C25K and this group has given me a focus. Hope to get started the week after next if I'm back to doing my usual level of activities and dog walks. Thanks you for your post - I need to be cautious else I'll do myself a(nother) mischief. It would be nice to feel fit again 😕

...and so say all of us! Just taking it gently, really is, for so many of us, the key. Each short walk, each gentle workout.. all serving to bring us slowly, and safely, back to full strength..You are doing the right thing. Enjoy those walks and know that fitness and warmer days will follow.

Strangely, my post for Catch up Corner, out tomorrow on C25K forum is all about, slow and steady.

Thanks for this...and, well done you x
