I don't check in here often enough.

MrGM was plagued with severe back pain almost all of last year - one early episode that took the usual month to get over, an all too brief period without and then a very long episode well over 6 months... and some possibility that a rather different pain they've been investigating up the wazzo could be MSK. It's had a major impact on our lives. He tends to be extremely reluctant to take any suggestions from his resident qualified person (Hmph) and it was a very long time before a physio with the right tone and approach prescribed tailored exercises... which he then did very diligently and they helped... but he has no notion of prevention and has let them tail off further than they should.

This was a reminder for me that I have let my own strength and flexibility practice tail off into nothingness. I had a good few years when I did a yoga practice, just 10 minutes or so usually, just about every single day, first thing, before going downstairs... until in fact Google was unwell and needed me to take her downstairs first. Well, she's been dead over 18 months now😢

I've been creeping back - essentially I've divided my practice into the standing and the floor elements and I do one or the other... which may help me avoid pain that can build up from doing the same exercise daily. It is nice to add in classes though... and here's my query... after 5-10 minutes I'll start to feel increasingly nauseous and unwell, to the point where it is really hard to continue. This morning I did a beginner Qi Gong class and the same thing happened (in fact...TMI alert... my whole GIT was distressed and it is a good job I do this in my bathroom...) I did, perhaps because of the forced break, manage to complete the class but I can't say it did anything at all for my sense of wellbeing in the short term.

Now, this might all be down to underlying health conditions, but it occurred to me this might actually be something that happens to lots of people and they might have strategies to deal with it.... so... over to you please!

How strange. I think my experience doesn’t really help here, as although I can get feeling nauseous, I usually can pin it down to something related to my hypothyroid condition. So just in case it helps, here’s my experience related to feeling nauseous.

1) I can become nauseous if I do morning intensive exercise without eating breakfast. (Slow running is ok, though)

I tend to have a protein smoothie as breakfast and when I plan an intensive an-aerobic workout (intensive indoor rowing session, for instance) I make sure it’s either later in the day or an hour or so after breakfast.

2) taking my medication and vitamins on wrong order or combination can make me feel nauseous.

3) being low in some nutrients (b12 or iron, not quite remember which) can make me nauseous.

4) taking my medication on empty stomach (which I’m prescribed for) can sometimes make me feel nauseous if I have fasted for longer.

Not sure any of this helps, but hope you find the reason for this. It might be an idea to do a vitamin/mineral blood test, as deficiencies can contribute to feeling nauseous.

Hello! Sorry that I missed this...

Gosh... what a conundrum... ! Maybe as CBDB suggests, a few check ups, might be the start... a routine blood test ? You could be low on something and that may be an indication of what is happening.

Nutrition...yes, hydration, yes... but I am sure you are well aware of what suits you and the lifestyle you have.

Now here is where, I am going out on a limb... maybe, just maybe, it is more mental than physical... I apologise in advance if I am on the wrong track. x

I only say this because, after Mr OF had his heart attack... I had feelings re exercise, just thinking about it, not even doing it, which mirrored some of yours. Feeling slightly nauseous etc.

I was basically overthinking... everything!

You lost Google... yes, 18 months ago... but what a loss... despite the fact that it was a release for your little friend. Your husband. His pain, you feel....the battle for diagnosis. the need for support, and if it is anything like us, the constant battling for it.

You say yourself how it has impacted...and I know exactly how that feels. He has let his exercises dwindle... you will , whether your realise it or not be reacting to that, as am I, as Mr OF has done the same. But, we cannot change that, we cannot make them do what we might do and here is where it is hard.

We have to learn to step away and start taking care of us. I charted my beginning back, on here... that helped me. I have an outdoor walking counsellor... down to once a month now.

I started, slow and steady, ( what else), to exercise again... and two weeks ago I re-graduated C25K. Breathing exercises play a HUGE part in my routines...yes, just breathing... and still a huge part of my routine even now.

Then, I moved on.. oh so slowly, varying what suited me and if I felt nauseous or dizzy I stopped.

YWA... I was not a huge fan... I am now... gentle exercises for after illness.. I was not ill but felt it... exercises for lower back pain... all short, gentle and moving me forward.

Gradually, building up a supportive foundation to keep me going and get me through... until I felt ready for my first run of C25K repeat...

I feel so much better... but am not yet there. I am considering a Tai chi Class and a Personal trainer as I have lost so much weight and muscle /tone.

So, again , I apologise, if this is of no help at all...got it totally wrong, and have overstepped the mark.

I don't want to suggest exercises until you know what is going on... but I can give you any links you feel may be helpful...just ask. Either here or by PM.

No worries Oldfloss it's good to have your thoughts and those of CBDB

For me it is very much something that comes on a while after I have started, not before and not right at the beginning, and doesn't happen when running (although I am of course familiar with the Toxic 10 of running!), and doesn't appear to be related to time of day/time of eating.

I'm very interested that this has happened to someone in connection with hypothyroid, which suggests that this may for me be down to underlying health condition. It's also, I think, fairly specific to doing a class, rather than my personal practice and I already know that learning or following physical routines is a massive demand on me. If (and it is a very big if) I am able to get beyond (which usually I am not), I don't have the same problem after I've done the class multiple times.

Having just spanked a misbehaving heart back to its normal rate with a Valsalva manoeuvre, I am starting to think this nausea may be a vagal thing. I am wryly amused that I suggested to SueAppleRun that she could perhaps try watching a yoga class through and then doing the movements and perhaps I should listen to myself!

🍏Glad to hear that excuses given to Mr GM helped him. Many of us battle to be consistent with exercise. I find it far easier to run outside in all weathers than to do a Pilates session in the comfort of home.

Sad to hear about the nausea & hope you get good medical help for your underlying conditions but here is one practical way that may help you. It certainly helped me doing postoperative exercise when I was extremely nauseous. Start with deep breathing exercises & then punctuate your workout at suitable moments with deep breathing before continuing.. it may seem interruptive but way better than the nausea! Hope it gives some relief but clearly there is more to it all. So sorry 😔

I'm not holding my breath (🤣) on any help for underlying condition, not unless there's a breakthrough (although I've given blood samples recently and complete endless surveys towards such a breakthrough).

But I'll definitely give the deep breathing a try, thanks.
