Should we have a monthly S&F check-in?

Hello everyone! How’s everyone’s S&F work going?

I wondered if we should do a monthly check-in? A kind of “What’s your plan for the next four weeks? Let us know!” And what kind of post and when? Maybe in the middle of each month, when all other running quests are in mid-swing?

I feel I'm not doing enough, but my time tells me otherwise. And writing it all down helps with understanding what's going on in my S&F planning.

When I started C25k, I didn’t do any, as the C25k amount of physical activity would drain me for the rest of the week. I started seriously foam rolling (and loved it) to address any tightness.

During consolidation after C25k graduation, I did the 5-week S&F plan ( healthunlocked.com/strength... ) as part of a 12-week fitness program ( healthunlocked.com/strength... ). And that started a daily S&F practice.

Now over the 2-3 years, this daily S&F practice changed. From that phase of Foam Rolling through to doing the 5th week of the S&F program repeatedly for quite some time! I really loved doing that program in our garden! ( healthunlocked.com/strength... )

Then came a daily Yoga practice for almost two years, with many S&F targeted explorations and challenges over that time. (All 30-day Yoga challenges here healthunlocked.com/strength... ).

When I started putting a daily indoor row on top of all that, time was getting short. I was doing three runs/week, each with a 12 min post-run stretch routine, and my 5 rows per week had another 15-20 cooldown stretch routine. (details of my routine here: healthunlocked.com/strength... )

They meant I, on average, did 20-25 min of flexibility work per day, almost the same amount I’d do when doing a daily yoga practice.

So I stopped yoga as I was getting short on time. I still do it here and there, as I also do targeted S&F work at times. And I'm always up for a multi-day challenge, and they can add quite a bit of S&F minutes to my daily averages.

The latest of these, the James Dunne 30-day challenge, was the latest fun addition, which added 15-20 minutes to any routine work I was doing.

So currently, I'm doing only post-run and post-row stretches, adding up to that 20min/day average, but I have recently started doing some upper body dumbbell strength work.

So what does your regular S&F practice look like? What's in your plan? And what’s out!

And would a mid-month check-in here on the forum be a good thing? What would you ideally like to tell us about your workouts? Should it be a quest? A challenge? A target setting? Or a comfy S&F corner to chat.

Let us know!

Hi! Have you noticed any changes in your body / running by doing all this?

I think it would be good for you to do a monthly check in and then you could have those useful links at the bottom by default.

tbh I find it really hard to stay motivated with S&F. I dont need F as I am hypermobile but I need a lot of S and I get bored. I did enjoy doing the James Dunne 30 days as there were a few of us holding each other accountable but then I had a sudden life few weeks when I wasnt able to do it.

I need to think how to fit it in to my week. What works best for you?

Hi! I've got a notification telling me I've got a new pm but it's not showing on my messages. I'm guessing it might be from you? Anyway, I tried to message you earlier to see if you fancy restarting the JD challenge next week? 😊

Yes I answered you, let's do this!

Yay brilliant! I've posted on the c25k and the Bridge to let people know 😃 shall we just use the old daily chats? I'm not sure I've got it in me to keep posting every day 😅

I think a new one for people to feel more involved but I think once a week? would that work for you?

Fab. Yes, I would love to do a monthly check in, just wasn’t sure. And we can catch up on how the most recent initiatives have benefited us.

JD has been great for both my knees and back, but then I had substantial recovery days between runs, so cannot tell if it was down to JD or recovery.

I've been wondering if there would be sense in a thread for "graduates" of the JD 30 Day Challenge to post on?

I have noticed a lot of changes in my running as a result and would have liked to share them, but would not really be a "running" post or an "S & F" post, but rather somewhere in between. 🤔

This is a good idea! Maybe the monthly catch up would be the place to chat about this, it might even encourage others to take up the challenge 😊

Yes, I think that’s a great idea. I do think it maybe should be mid month, so it doesn’t clash with too many other posts? Other possibility is to do it every 2 weeks, as it feels more regular.

If it's not too much for you, fortnightly would be great, keep the momentum going. And we can always help out with the 'hosting' like other people do with the monthly quests on the bridge and marathon forums 😊
