Tinnitus

I wonder if anyone else is suffering from tinnitus. I have noticed my tinnitus is getting worse and was reading up on it. So it seems it can affect people with auto immune diseases. I am taking 20mg methotrexate each week and these drugs are known to increase symptoms of tinnitus. Does anyone else have similar issues, and what can be done to relieve it? I use ear spray to keep the wax down to help it. Thanks.

Hi Lucky Lucy

I have tinnitus in my right ear and have also read it can be due to scleroderma. I forgot to mention it to my consultant last time so it is on the list for next time.

Interesting to hear that methotrexate can increase symptoms. My GP would like the rheumie to increase my methotrexate.

I am afraid I don’t know of anything to help but my symptoms are quite variable.

Hi Lucky Lucy,

I have tinnitus in both ears and have done for years , I can get pulsitile tinnitus when I lie down which really bothers me and disturbs my sleep.

I just try to keep them dry and use a tissue and a cool hairdryer after the shower to dry them as best I can because I believe water in the ear can make it appear louder. I have seen a few ENT specialists over the years and most advise background noise ,more as a distraction because the tinnitus seems worse when in a quiet environment, also relaxation techniques .

I haven’t really found much to help ,other than that.

It can be so frustrating and irritating,I hope it improves for you.

Thank you. It's been getting worse over the last couple of years and now I know why. It's not going to get easier any time soon so yes, I might go down that route.

I have this problem too. I think distraction techniques are best and have been told that CBT can be offered for this on the NHS. There was also an app being trialled last year by Oto which I started but as I had other difficulties I was dealing with at the time I discontinued. May be worth getting in touch with them? Hope you can find some relief xx
