Acid Reflux - coughing

I have been suffering for the last 7 weeks with a constant cough. I take Gaviscon and 1 x 20mg omeprazole, I have not seen a doctor yet as I have been away. Does anyone else get a constant cough which may be related to GERD? I also now have a runny nose but can't be a cold as I've had it so long. Can anyone advise please.

Thank you.

Omeprazole has nasty side effects and should only be short-term use. Instead, if you can afford £35.00 per month - as, ridiculously not available on prescription despite my request to NICHE - try totally natural German product "Toxa-Prevent" with no side effects!

I have been on omeprazole for well over 15 years with no side effects, without it I would be in dire straits!

SunnyKC most Drs, including consultants, feel that any potential side effects of PPIs are outweighed by the dangers that scleroderma patients face from poorly controlled acid reflux which can increase the risk of lung scarring and ILD. In addition there is a quality of life issue due to sleep deprivation in particular.

However, Gib90 should see a doctor to get checked out, and the current medication may not be right or strong enough. There are also lifestyle issues to consider, just do internet searches on reflux - the SRUK website is useful.

I have been on prescription PPIs for nearly 40 years but have changed several times.

Would advise you to see a doctor. Many of us with Scleroderma have serious GERD/reflux, oesophagus and gastric problems - the sooner they are treated the greater the possibility of a better outcome

Seen my doctor, all they do is increase the dose of Lansaprazole.

If it's interfering with your quality of life (especially if it's getting worse), can you ask to be referred to gastroenterology ? See if they can find out what's causing it?

Other PPIs might suit you better. Lansoprazole stopped working for me so I was changed to esomeprazole which was a massive improvement.

I too take esomeprazole which is better than omeprazole for me. I also have a back up prescription of Gaviscon Advance liquid which I can take up to 4 times a day if necessary. I usually resort to that at night only when I'm most likely to have problems.

Hi cheese lover, I have prescription Gaviscon Advance as well as OMEPRAZOLE. The Gaviscon advance does help but I do find it so hard to swallow, it seems to stick in my throat for ages. I do close my eyes when I put the spoon in my mouth, count to three and swallow, coward that I am!

Hi. When my symptoms first started with scleroderma i also had a dripping nose and silent reflux they called it, i also get stomache acid getting into the lungs which causes coughing episodes for months at a time and a bit of breathing difficulty when lying down, i am on lanzoprazole as omeprazole gave me bad stomache pains and i couldnt stop burping honestly it made things a whole lot worse, try sleeping with a few pillows so your head is raised , they told me to put books under the legs of the bed ( headboard side obviously) so to keep your upper body elevated to try keep the stomache acid from flowing into the lungs, i also had problems with sinusus and an ear infection all at the same time and i'm convinced it was all related to the silent reflux, so it can get into the lungs.

Do you think it worth me going to the doctors?

Yeah it wouldn't do any harm speaking to a doctor, ive been for a lung function test and it came back fine so i'm guessing it's the stomache acid getting into the lungs thats causing the wheezyness and cough

Agree with Mylomydog, I have silent reflux and aspiration, my bed is built in so can’t raise the headboard but I’ve increased my pillows to four, seems a bit over the top and doesn’t do much for the look of the bedding, ha ha, but it’s really helped with the choking/coughing at night. I’m also careful with what I eat, chewing food thoroughly and slowly and try to eat early evening and certainly not after nine pm.

Thank you for all your replies. I have been to the doctors and they have upped the omeprazole and given me more gaviscon. Told me to go back if it doesn't help!
