SIBO symptoms?

Good evening,

I am struggling with stomach problems and am trying to find out if my symptoms could be caused by SIBO.please can anyone advise if they have SIBO and have similar symptoms.

Right sided pain, under ribs, this can also be in my back and up to my shoulder blade .dull ache that can be there the majority of the day, seems to ease a little when I eat for a short time.also sometimes feels like something stuck under rib..on occasion I get a sharp stabbing pain. I get a tingling sensation in the area on my back around the base of my right rib.

Noisy ,stomach, lots of burping and flatulance. This also happens when I turn over in bed at night usually burping. The discomfort can seem worse when I lie on my right side causing me to lose sleep.

I feel fuller quicker and get a little bloated feeling but don’t really look bloated.

I sometimes struggle to go to the toilet, but go daily. But then on occasion there may be urgency.

I have had scans, ultrasound ,gastroscope and colonoscopy which have ruled out any gallbladder issue. I also had a HIDA scan that checked the function of gallbladder that was okay too.I go back to the gastroenterologist in about 3 weeks, for my follow up appointment.

Thank you

I’m being treated for SIBO. My main symptoms were painful bloating to the extent that I looked several months pregnant at times and a great deal of urgency, with occasional accidents. I already had, and still have, problems swallowing, and can only eat a little at a time. My diet is limited.

I have systemic sclerosis and my Rheumatologist has prescribed rifaximin which I take for a week every month. This certainly helps the bloating, and diarrhoea.

I would say that they are more gallbladder problems, particularly as it radiates to your shoulder.

I don’t think there are rules with CTD GI stuff ie where it hurts - unlike gallbladder or pancreas. But have you had pancreatitis ruled out as this is middle to left side whereas the gallbladder is usually right side radiating to the middle.

I have test confirmed, GERD/ silent reflux, hiatus hernia, polyps, Gastroparesis, slow transit colon. I also have presumed SIBO because they don’t do the gas test in my area but with systemic sclerosis and nasty typical symptoms it’s pretty much assumed.

I’ve also once had acute pancreatitis and cholecystitis - the pancreatitis was actually misdiagnosed as cholecystitis and UTI sepsis once some years ago and was caused by Azathioprine. I finally got my gallbladder plus stone removed and all my GI problems are now severe dysmotility related so wouldn’t show on most of the tests you describe having. You’d need motility testing ie a manometry, a gastric emptying scan and a colon transit study to confirm these. But yes could well be SIBO from symptoms - especially the burping and the noises. It could also be Gastroparesis which is basically a paralysed gut. For me pain is usually related to my limited food intake these days - so mostly liquid or soft low fodmap and ensure plus. I also get prescribed Rifaxamin - 2 weeks on 2 weeks off.

I think if I were you I’d ask for motility testing - which my rheumatologist arranged for me initially. Then you might get a prokenetic which I’ve found has helped the pain a lot. If it continues then a gastro might well test for or just diagnose SIBO

My symptoms were the same as Lupiknits. Lots of bloating and urgency. All of the discomfort you describe. I had a breath test where you drink a glucose solution. The baseline is noted when you breath into a monitor and then after drinking the glucose you repeat the monitor testing every 15 minutes. Anything over 12 was described as a positive. I started at 36 and ended at 174.Since then I have been having antibiotics when the bloating gets too bad. Metronidazole has helped me the most. Some people have antibiotics monthly but I prefer to request them when the Sibo becomes out of control again.

Good luck with your gastro appointment. There is a lot of information about this subject especially around diet.
