Can Scleroderma cause mouth ulcers?
I too hv sclerederma and raynauds and yes mouth ulcers are a symptom and I get them but let them heal on there own, I also get clusters of blisters in the roof of my mouth lasting upto 4 days at a time
Hi Jeano,I have Raynaud's and Scleroderma.I have oral Lichen Planus which when it flares up can be very painful.I sometimes get mouth ulcers and lumps and sores on my tongue.Inside my cheeks are white patches and usually this is a good sign for diagnosis. This can also affect the skin.I have a steroid tablet which I dissolve in water and use as a mouth rinse. It is not for continuous use, only when I get a flare up and because I only rinse with it it does not affect my system.May I suggest you mention you problem to your dentist if you have not already done so..Hope this is of some help.Take care.
Thank you for your reply
Certain medications taken for scleroderma can cause mouth ulcers. I get them quite often. Spoke to my dentist who said that there is no effective treatment but they do go away after a couple of weeks - and then new ones start! When I first went on methotrexate I was given folic acid tablets as they were meant to help prevent mouth ulcers.

Please may I ask how you got on with methotrexate? I have had it for about 6 months now without much improvement. I am now on the maximum oral dose so they are now talking about injections.
I was previously on sulphasaiisine which seemed to be controlling things except it seemed to turn my hair a yellow colour { much like the drug }, also yellowing of bedding and round the neck of light coloured clothing. I suspect caused by too much perspiration also caused by the drug. I feel a bit as if I have brought this on myself. The colouring did not wash out, so I have had to let my hair grow out { nearly there } and replace pillow slips and duvet covers.I'm hoping the injections have a better result,if not I don't know the answer.

Thank you for your reply. Lucky for me the ulcers lasted only 10 days after using salt mouthwashes, as my G.P. said there was no treatment for them, but suggested salt mouthwashes, which I never even thought of.
I had mouth ulcers for years and suffered greatly. Then one of my doctors suggested it was an allergic reaction to the non steroidals I was taking (for joint pain). i went off the medication, and have not had a mouth ulcer since (and it's been years!) So, it is very possible you are allergic to a drug you are taking.
As I am only on heart medication at the moment, it's doubtful that they would cause mouth ulcers, as I have been on them for years, but thank you for your reply.
Try anbusol liquid - it gives afew seconds of intense pain and then it takes the pain away for quite a while. Also, dental hygiene is important so I use Cordysol mouthwash and toothpaste when I get ulcers. I've been told it's the Methotrexate that causes them.
