Scleroderma - mouth issues

Hi 👋 Over the last 6 months or so I’ve been suffering with mouth issues. Very dry mouth/tongue and ulcers. The inside of my mouth/cheeks are so sore, I suspect it’s tightening. My latest dentist appointment, when my mouth was stretched it felt like my lips were going to split open, so sore. I’m finding taking tablets tricky because when I drink to swallow a tablet, I end up biting down on the inside of my cheeks.

I’m due to see my rheumatologist soon but wondered is there anything out there that could help.

Thanks in advance for any responses

I use Biotene Oral Rinse 2 times a day. And they have Biotene lozenges. It really helps me...I hope it helps you 🙏🏼

Sorry you are having such trouble with your mouth. My dentist prescribed Duraphat toothpaste for me and I use Bioextra mouth spray which does help. It is most annoying and most of the time I end up sucking a sugar free sweet to stop my mouth from drying out. Ask your rheumatologist/ Nurse specialist they may have solutions for you and so should your dentist.Best of luck

Hello there, so sorry to hear what you’re going through. I use Xylimelts for dry mouth and find them very useful. I buy them online from a shop called The Mouth Ulcers Shop in Southampton… they have lots of dry mouth products listed on their website. I use the unflavoured Xylimelts and they’ve been great for me. I also use Duraphat toothpaste prescribed by dentist. Best of luck and hope you feel better soon.

I use Biotene gel - it helps. A word of caution if you have pets: many dry mouth products, toothpastes and sugarless products contain the artificial sweetener, Xylitol. This sweetener is HIGHLY toxic to dogs. It killed my very healthy 8-year old Keeshond, Romeo. He weighed 45 pounds (20.5 kilos). Someone accidentally dropped a pack of sugarless gum in my yard and Romeo ate one piece - he died after one week of very expensive medical treatment. I didn't know what killed him until I found the pack of gum in the yard 3 weeks after he died.

I would bet money that you have Sjodgrens. If you have one autoimmune disease you are most likely to have another. This was mine. Before being diagnosed from RS doctor my dentist said I had the driest mouth he's ever seen. BUT there are real drugs out there that work! One is Ceviline (spelling). It stimulates the salivary glands. I can tell you now that these OTC things do not work! Another is called Pilocarpine. Ask your RA for these. PLEASE before it destroys your teeth like it did mine
