Nose Bleeds

Been having quite a few nose bleeds recently and read somewhere that this is another symptom of scleroderma. Had one last night that was quite powerful and went on for a good 15 minutes! Does anyone else suffer from this problem?

Do you have secondary Sjogrens with your scleroderma? I have this, and it seems to make my nasal passages quite dry

Hello inkedup. I have a dry lining of my nose it was beginning to crack inside and bleed. I was referred to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist by the rhumy for my dysphagia. I mentioned my dry nose to him and told him that I applied vaseline to my inner nostrils because it was so uncomfortable and sore. He told me that I was doing the right thing as that was what he would recommend. It does help to keep my nose more comfortable I apply it every night with a cotton bud taking care not to poke the bud too far up my nose. I am having tests for the dysphagia as there is pooling of liquids in my throat when I drink and I choke on certain foods. The lack of saliva does not help but is not the cause.

I had a Barium Swallow and it showed that liquids pooled in my throat and did not travel straight down as they should do. I have also had a Gastroscopy that only revealed that I had some irritation in my stomach caused by anti inflamatory drugs. It did not reveal why I was suffering with dysphagia. The next test is a videofluoroscopic swallow observed by two speach therapists to see if they can find out what is causing the swallowing difficulty. My mouth is so dry that my throat is constantly sore in makes me hoarse and affects my speach. Has anyone else had a similar problem when swallowing liquids? I know swallowing difficulties are common with Sjrogrens but had thought that I Should not have difficulty with liquids.

Thanks for the answer Inkedup. Yes I do, could this be the cause of them? If it is, then I understand, but was getting a bit concerned as to why they were happening.

Hiya ewwww that doesnt sound very nice for you :(. I have had the scleroderma and raynauds diagnosis for 16 years, and the only time I have had nose bleeds is when i had Viagra, and other vasodilators, (not at the same time) have the same effect with me. Could it be medication related do you think ? x.

Not sure if it is medication related as I haven't changed any meds for a while now. I have a doctor's appointment next Friday so will ask him and see if he has any idea.

hello, I have scleroderma and sjogrens and have had 2 nosebleeds in the past week. Have never had them before. But sorry no explanation for you. Is it something in the air?

Hi Yorky, How spooky is that then. I thought they may have been caused by a rise in my blood pressure but checked that each time and it was ok. Your comment about something in the air also made me think perhaps it could have something to do with the air pressure but I don't have a barrometer to check that :) If I find a definitive answer I will let you know.

If the bleeding continues I would see your doctor. I have Sjrogrens and in my case I think that is the reason for the difficulty with my nose.

Hi Jessie122

Thank you for your reply. I have Sjrogrens but can't say that I feel that the lining of my nose is particularly dry but it may be that causing the problem. I am seeing my doctor on Friday so will mention it to him. I must say that I find this site very informative and there are always people who can offer advice and good suggestions. Thank you x

Hello yes, The inside of my nose gets very dry and tight. I visited an Ear Nose and Throat specialist about another problem and mentioned my dry nose. I expained that I used Vaseline to moisturise inside my nostrils and it gave me relief. He said it was exactly the right thing to do. I usually apply it at night with a cotton bud just a little in each nostril. You could apply it night and morning. You can apply with your finger if you wish. If you use a cotton bud take care not to poke it too far up your nose. Vaseline is an excellent moisturiser. I have never heard of a specialist product for dry nostrils. I have eye drops and Eye Lube for my eyes and artificial saliva for my mouth.

If you are worried visit you doctor. I hope you get some relief soon.

Best Wishes

Hiya I have raynauds and have nosebleeds, if they are a problem speak to your doctor. If it lasts more than 20 mins seek medical advice. I also use Vaseline both nostrils twice a day, helps soften my nose, like Jessie122 advices.

Hi bookworm. I will try the Vaseline treatment like Jessie 122 says and hopefully this will help. I mentioned it to my doctor but he couldn't come up with any reason for them happening. Thank you all for your comments and help.
