I have recently tapered off two different antidepressants that were introduced recently it was horrible. Now I have insomnia so bad. I had been on Prozac and Elavil for 30 years got off so when were put on Celexa and Trazodone and have tapered off Celexa 2 months ago and Trazodone 20 days ago. My GP kept doubling my medications and I was getting so sick I mentally feel better now except for insomnia! I'm scared but I don't feel depressed anymore have anxiety once in awhile which is a great Improvement.

Mayb it's still part of the tapering process. Your body adjusting to the removal of the chemicals?

Hi Angiebird,

Congratulations on not feeling depressed anymore with only a small amount of anxiety!! That's a huge improvement!! And getting off of meds is a great move, too, as long as you stay mentally healthy. The trazodone is a big help with insomnia and now you don't have that help. You may yet normalize in your sleep patterns or you may find that insomnia is a problem you must now live with...it's early to be sure.

I recommend you research the many ways people can help themselves get better sleep without drugs before you try any medicine for it. I have insomnia problems, too, so I can sympathize with you easily! 😕 Some common helping ideas are: make bedtime about the same time every day; have a quiet time prior to bedtime; reduce or eliminate TV, computer screen time, etc., about an hour prior to bedtime; keep the bedroom for sleeping and not other stimulating activities. Some people find help with OTC supplements such as melatonin or valerian root which are considered "natural", others use OTC drugs such as diphenhydramine/Benadryl which is only a good idea to help out occasionally. This isn't all you can try, but go ahead and research that for yourself.

I wish you the best of luck with getting back to normal for yourself!
