Dexamethasone mouth rinse.

Has anyone taken this? It’s to prevent mouth sores/ulcers in mouth. I just started taking it. Dosage is 4 times each day. Wondering how long to wait between between each dose? I started this yesterday but only had time for 2 doses since I had to wait to take it after taking cancer meds. Today I took first dose at 10:00 am, after having coffee, because you can’t eat or drink for an hour after taking it. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you, Robin

Hi Robin. I was given this to take when I was put on afinitor. The directions were twice a day - morning and night. After about 4 days I stopped the mouthwash. I wasnt having sores. Then occassionally when I felt a sore might be starting a took a swish, letting it sit in my mouth a bit (30 seconds). That is it! I am not saying what I do is right, but it has worked for me. Which oral meds are you on? Faith

I have been taking it when needed. It does seem to help, though not immediately. I usually don't get ulcers, just sore parts of my mouth, mainly my tongue. I'm not sure how my onc wrote the prescription, but the last time I had it filled I got FIVE bottles! The pharmacist said they are good till 2022. I hope I use them up by then. Because of my insurance, the whole lot only cost me $5.

I use a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon of baki NF soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt over half a glass for prevention. It also helps me get up in the morning with a much less slimy mouth and negligible mouth odour. I guess that this mixture is gentle on the mouth and kills microbes effectively. I keep harder stuff for when I actually develop an ulcer.

I hope you will check with the prescribers office or pharmacist for better instructions.

And,

I used Yin Care "Supreme Oral Care" mouth rinse which was recommended by my Chinese Medicine Practitioner. It performed really well during weeks of chemo infusion back in 2010 and worked much better than the MD prescriptions at the time. Now on Ibrance, it is helping me again. I usually use about 1/2 capful undiluted, 2-3 times per day depending on how bad the sore were and hold it in my mouth as long as I can. Sores clear up fast. Available online $25
